[The second interpretation:]
916 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bukayr narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Lahi'ah told me, 'Ata' ibn Dinar told me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding the saying of Allah: "So they have incurred wrath upon wrath," he says: They have rendered themselves deserving of indignation upon indignation.
The third interpretation:
917 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi regarding: "So they have incurred wrath upon wrath," as for the first wrath, it is when He became angry with them regarding the Calf. As for the second wrath, He became angry with them when they disbelieved in Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
His saying: "And for the disbelievers is a humiliating punishment."
918 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, Muhammad ibn 'Ali narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim narrated to us, from Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, regarding His saying: "A humiliating punishment," meaning by the humiliating [one], disgrace.
His saying: "And when it is said to them, 'Believe in what Allah has revealed.'"
919 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Muhammad ibn al-'Ala' Abu Kurayb narrated to us, 'Uthman ibn Sa'id al-Zayyat narrated to us, Bishr ibn 'Umarah narrated to us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "And when it is said to them, 'Believe,'" he says: And when it is said to them, "Believe [in the truth]."
His saying: "They say, 'We believe in what was revealed to us.'"
920 - Through the same chain from Ibn 'Abbas: "They say, 'We believe,'" they are saying, "We speak [it]."
His saying: "And they disbelieve in what is beyond it."
921 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, from Abu Ja'far, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah: "And they disbelieve in what is beyond it," meaning in what came after it—that is, what came after the Torah. Similar [interpretations] were narrated from Qatadah and al-Rabi'.
922 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi: "And when it is said to them, 'Believe in what Allah has revealed,' they say, 'We believe in what was revealed to us,' and they disbelieve in what is beyond it," and it is the Qur'an. Allah says: "And it is the truth, confirming what is with them."

٩١٦ - حدثنا أبو زرعة ثنا نحيى بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُكَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ لَهِيعَةَ حَدَّثَنِي عَطَاءُ بْنُ دِينَارٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ فباؤ بِغَضَبٍ عَلَى غَضَبٍ:
يَقُولُ اسْتَوْجَبُوا سُخْطاً عَلَى سُخْطٍ.
الْوَجْهُ الثَّالِثُ:
٩١٧ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ حَمَّادٍ ثنا أَسْبَاطٌ عَنِ السُّدِّيِّ فباؤ بِغَضَبٍ عَلَى غَضَبٍ أَمَّا الْغَضَبُ الأَوَّلُ: فَهُوَ حِينَ غَضِبَ عَلَيْهِمْ فِي الْعِجْلِ. وَأَمَّا الْغَضَبُ الثَّانِي: فَغَضِبَ عَلَيْهِمْ حِينَ كَفَرُوا بِمُحَمَّدٍ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
قوله: ولهم عَذَابٌ مُهِينٌ
٩١٨ - قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُزَاحِمٍ عَنْ بُكَيْرِ بْنِ مَعْرُوفٍ عَنْ مُقَاتِلِ بْنِ حَيَّانَ قَوْلُهُ: عَذَابٌ مُهِينٌ يَعْنِي بِالْمُهِينَ الْهَوَانَ.
قَوْلُهُ: وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ آمِنُوا بِمَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهِ
٩١٩ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلاءِ أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الزَّيَّاتُ ثنا بِشْرُ بْنُ عُمَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي رَوْقٍ عَنِ الضَّحَّاكِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ: وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ آمِنُوا يَقُولُ: وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ صَدِّقُوا.
قَوْلُهُ: قَالُوا نُؤْمِنُ بِمَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْنَا
٩٢٠ - بِهِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ: قَالُوا نُؤْمِنُ يَقُولُونَ نَقُولُ.
قوله: وَيَكْفُرُونَ بِمَا وَرَاءَهُ
٩٢١ - حَدَّثَنَا عِصَامُ بْنُ رَوَّادٍ ثنا آدَمُ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ عَنِ الرَّبِيعِ عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ:
وَيَكْفُرُونَ بِمَا وَرَاءَهُ أَيْ بِمَا بَعْدَهُ- يَعْنِي مَا بَعْدَ التَّوْرَاةِ- وَرُوِيَ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، وَالرَّبِيعِ نَحْوُ ذَلِكَ.
٩٢٢ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ حَمَّادٍ ثنا أَسْبَاطٌ عَنِ السُّدِّيِّ: وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ آمِنُوا بِمَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ قَالُوا نُؤْمِنُ بِمَا أُنْزِلَ علينا ويكفرون بما وَرَاءَهُ وَهُوَ الْقُرْآنُ. يَقُولُ اللَّهُ: وَهُوَ الْحَقُّ مُصَدِّقًا لما معهم.
