Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 1 · Page 202And the second opinion

Translation · EN

The second view: The verse is muhkam (definitive/non-abrogated) and its interpretation relates to the voluntary prayer during travel.

1121 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from 'Abd al-Malik ibn Abi Sulayman, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Umar, who said: When this verse was revealed: "So wherever you [might] turn, there is the Face of Allah," it means that you may pray wherever your mount turns during travel for voluntary prayer. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), when returning to Makkah, would pray on his mount for voluntary prayer, gesturing with his head toward Madinah.

The third view: It is muhkam (definitive/non-abrogated), and its interpretation is facing the Ka'bah.

1122 - Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us, Hajjaj ibn Muhammad al-A'war narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, Ibrahim ibn Abi Bakr informed me, from Mujahid, regarding his saying: "So wherever you [might] turn, there is the Face of Allah," [he said]: Wherever you are, there is a Qiblah that you face, which is the Ka'bah. Something similar was narrated from al-Hasan.

The fourth view: It is mansukh (abrogated):

1123 - Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us, Hajjaj ibn Muhammad narrated to us, Ibn Jurayj and 'Uthman ibn 'Ata' informed us, from 'Ata', from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: The first part of the Qur'an to be abrogated, as far as it has been mentioned to us—and Allah knows best—is the matter of the Qiblah. He said: "To Allah belongs the East and the West. So wherever you [might] turn, there is the Face of Allah." So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) faced and prayed toward Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem), and left the Ancient House (the Ka'bah). Then Allah turned him toward the Ancient House, so He abrogated it and said: "So turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque. And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces toward it [in prayer]." Abu Muhammad [Ibn Abi Hatim] said: Something similar was narrated from Abu al-'Aliyah, al-Hasan, 'Ata' al-Khurasani, 'Ikrimah, Qatadah, al-Suddi, and Zayd ibn Aslam.

His saying: "There is the Face of Allah. Indeed, Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing"

1124 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, 'Abdah ibn Sulayman al-Kilabi narrated to us, from Nadr ibn al-'Arabi, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas: "So wherever you [might] turn, there is the Face of Allah," [he said]: The Qiblah of Allah, wherever you turn, East or West.
