His saying: "Those to whom We have given the Book."

1156 - Al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, Ma'mar informed us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "Those to whom We have given the Book," he said: The Jews and the Christians.

His saying: "They recite it with its true recitation."

[The First Aspect]

1157 - Abu Sa'id ibn Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan narrated to us, al-'Anqazi—meaning 'Amr ibn Muhammad—narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, from Abu Malik, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Those to whom We have given the Book, they recite it with its true recitation," he said: They permit its lawful [acts] and forbid its forbidden [acts], and they do not distort it from its places. It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud similarly.

1158 - My father narrated to us, Muqatil ibn Muhammad narrated to us, Waki' narrated to us, from Mubarak, from al-Hasan regarding His saying: "Those to whom We have given the Book, they recite it with its true recitation," he said: They act upon its decisive (muhkam) verses and believe in its ambiguous (mutashabih) verses, and they entrust whatever is problematic for them to the One who knows it.

1159 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn Musa ibn Abi Za'idah narrated to us, Dawud ibn Abi Hind informed us, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "They recite it with its true recitation," he said: They follow it with its true following. Then he recited: "And the moon as it follows it" [Qur'an 91:2], saying: It follows it. It was narrated from 'Ikrimah, 'Ata', Mujahid, Abu Razin, and Ibrahim al-Nakha'i similarly.

The Second Aspect:

1160 - My father narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn Musa and 'Abd Allah ibn 'Imran al-Asbahani narrated to us, both said: Yahya ibn Yaman narrated to us, Usamah ibn Zayd narrated to us, from his father, from 'Umar ibn al-Khattab: "They recite it with its true recitation," he said: When he passes by a mention of Paradise, he asks Allah for Paradise, and when he passes by a mention of the Fire, he seeks refuge with Allah from the Fire.

His saying: "Those believe in it. And whoever disbelieves in it - then it is those who are the losers."

[The First Aspect]

1161 - Muhammad ibn 'Ubayd Allah ibn al-Munadi informed me in what he wrote to me, Yunus ibn Muhammad al-Mu'addib narrated to us, Shayban al-Nahwi narrated to us, from Qatadah: "Those to whom We have given the Book, they recite it with its true recitation. Those believe in it," he said: Among them are the companions of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), who believed in the signs of Allah and affirmed them.
