His statement: "So if they believe in the like of that which you believe in."

1306 - al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabah narrated to us, Yahya ibn 'Abbad and Shababah narrated to us, they both said: Shu'bah narrated to us, Abu Hamzah narrated to us, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: Do not say, "So if they believe in the like of that which you believe in," for Allah has no like. Instead, say: "So if they believe in that which you believe in, and believe in what you have believed in." The wording is that of Ibn 'Abbad.

1307 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His statement: "So if they believe in the like of that which you believe in, then they are rightly guided," he said: Allah, Glory be to Him, informed that faith is the firmest handle (al-'urwah al-wuthqa), that He does not accept any deed except with it, and that He does not forbid Paradise except to those who abandon it.

His statement: "Then they are rightly guided."

1308 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi', then he said: "So if they believe in the like of that which you believe in, then they are rightly guided," and said: Whoever speaks this sincerely from his heart—meaning faith—has been rightly guided.

His statement: "But if they turn away."

1309 - And with the same chain, from al-Rabi' ibn Anas: "But if they turn away"—meaning from faith.

1310 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan informed us, Salamah narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us: "But if they turn away"—in their disbelief.

His statement: "Then they are only in opposition."

1311 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far narrated to us, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah: "In opposition"—meaning in separation. Similar has been reported from Qatadah and al-Rabi' ibn Anas.

His statement: "So Allah will suffice you against them."

1312 - It was read to Yunus ibn 'Abd Allah, Ibn Wahb narrated to us, Ziyad ibn Yunus narrated to us, Nafi' ibn Abi Nu'aym narrated to us, who said: Some of the Caliphs sent the Mushaf (codex) of 'Uthman ibn 'Affan to me so that I might correct it. I said to him: The people say that his Mushaf was in his lap when he was killed, and the blood fell upon the "So Allah will suffice you against them, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing." Nafi' said: My eyes looked upon this verse. And it has already preceded.
