His statement: "And we are sincere to Him."
1317 - Yunus ibn 'Abd al-A'la narrated to us, Ibn Wahb narrated to us, Sufyan al-Thawri narrated to us, from 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Rufay', from Abu Thumamah, he said: The Disciples (al-Hawariyyun) said: O Spirit of Allah, inform us, who is the one sincere to Allah? He said: The one who acts for the sake of Allah and does not like for people to praise him.
His statement: "Or do you say that Abraham and Ishmael..."
1318 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far narrated to us, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah, he said: The Jews and Christians claimed that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Descendants (al-Asbat) were Jews or Christians, while Judaism only existed long after them.
His statement: "And who is more unjust than one who conceals a testimony he has from Allah..." (the verse).
1319 - And with the same chain, from Abu al-'Aliyah: "And who is more unjust than one who conceals a testimony he has from Allah?" He said: They are the Jews and the Christians; they concealed Islam, while they knew that it was the religion of Allah. They also concealed [the truth about] Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—while they knew that he was the Messenger of Allah. They found him written with them in the Torah and the Gospel as not being a Jew or a Christian. Similar has been reported from Qatadah and al-Rabi' ibn Anas.
1320 - Al-Hasan ibn Ahmad narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bashshar narrated to us, Surur ibn al-Mughirah narrated to me, from 'Abbad ibn Mansur, from al-Hasan regarding His statement: "Or do you say that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Descendants were Jews or Christians? Say, are you more knowing or is Allah? And who is more unjust than one who conceals a testimony he has from Allah? And Allah is not unaware of what you do." He said: The testimony of Allah that they concealed was that they used to read in the Book of Allah which came to them that the religion is Islam, that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Descendants were innocent of Judaism and Christianity. So they bore witness to Allah regarding that and acknowledged it upon themselves to Allah, yet they concealed the testimony of Allah that they had regarding that. That is what they concealed of the testimony of Allah, "And Allah is not unaware of what you do."
His statement: "That is a nation..."
1321 - My father narrated to us, Ibn al-Tabba' and Musaddad and Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us, they said: Yahya ibn Sa'id narrated to us, from al-Hakam ibn Farrukh, he said: Abu al-Malih said: An 'Ummah (nation) is from forty to one hundred and more.

قوله: وَنَحْنُ لَهُ مُخْلِصُونَ
١٣١٧ - حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى ثنا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ثنا سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ رُفَيْعٍ عَنْ أَبِي ثُمَامَةَ، قَالَ الْحَوَارِيُّونَ: يَا رُوحَ اللَّهِ أَخْبِرْنَا مَنِ الْمُخْلِصُ لِلَّهِ، قَالَ: الَّذِي يَعْمَلُ لِلَّهِ لَا يُحِبُّ أَنْ يَحْمَدَهُ النَّاسُ.
قَوْلُهُ: أَمْ تَقُولُونَ إِنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْمَاعِيلَ
١٣١٨ - حَدَّثَنَا عِصَامُ بْنُ رَوَّادٍ ثنا آدَمُ ثنا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ عَنِ الرَّبِيعِ عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ قَالَ: زَعَمَ الْيَهُودُ وَالنَّصَارَى أَنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْمَاعِيلَ وَإِسْحَاقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ وَالأَسْبَاطَ كَانُوا هُودًا أَوْ نَصَارَى وَإِنَّمَا كَانَتِ الْيَهُودِيَّةُ بَعْدَ هَؤُلاءِ بِزَمَانٍ.
قَوْلُهُ: وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنْ كَتَمَ شَهَادَةً عِنْدَهُ مِنَ الله ... الْآيَةُ
١٣١٩ - وَبِهِ عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ: وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنْ كَتَمَ شَهَادَةً عِنْدَهُ مِنَ اللَّهِ قَالَ هُمُ الْيَهُودُ وَالنَّصَارَى كَتَمُوا الإِسْلامَ، وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّهُ دِينُ اللَّهِ، وَكَتَمُوا مُحَمَّدًا- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ، وَهُمْ يَجِدُونَهُ مَكْتُوبًا عِنْدَهُمْ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ وَالإِنْجِيلِ أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ يَهُودِيًّا وَلا نَصْرَانِيًّا وَرُوِيَ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ «١» وَالرَّبِيعِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ نَحْوُ ذَلِكَ.
١٣٢٠ - حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بن بشار حدثني سرور ابن الْمُغِيرَةِ عَنْ عَبَّادِ بْنِ مَنْصُورٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَوْلُهُ: أَمْ تَقُولُونَ إِنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْمَاعِيلَ وَإِسْحَاقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ وَالْأَسْبَاطَ كَانُوا هُودًا أَوْ نَصَارَى قُلْ أَأَنْتُمْ أَعْلَمُ أَمِ اللَّهُ وَمْنَ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنْ كَتَمَ شَهَادَةً عِنْدَهُ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَمَا اللَّهُ بِغَافِلٍ عَمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ فَقَالَ: كَانَتْ شَهَادَةُ اللَّهِ الَّذِي كَتَمُوا أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا يَقْرَءُونَ فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ الَّذِي أَتَاهُمْ إنَّ الدِّينَ الإِسْلامُ، وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ، وَأَنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْمَاعِيلَ وَإِسْحَاقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ وَالأَسْبَاطَ كَانُوا بُرَّاءً مِنَ الْيَهُودِيَّةِ وَالنَّصْرَانِيَّةِ. فَشَهِدُوا لِلَّهِ بِذَلِكَ، وَأَقَرُّوا بِهِ عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ لِلَّهِ فَكَتَمُوا شَهَادَةَ اللَّهِ: عِنْدَهُمْ مِنْ ذَلِكَ. فَذَلِكَ مَا كَتَمُوا مِنْ شَهَادَةِ اللَّهِ وَمَا اللَّهُ بِغَافِلٍ عَمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ
