from Ibn 'Abbas, that the Jews said to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace): "O Muhammad, what has turned you away from your qibla which you used to face, while you claim that you are upon the creed of Ibrahim and his religion? Return to your qibla which you used to face, and we will follow you and believe in you." They only wanted to tempt him away from his religion. So Allah revealed: "The foolish among the people will say, 'What has turned them away from their qibla which they used to face?'" It was narrated from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, Qatadah, al-Suddi, and al-Rabi' ibn Anas, similar to that. Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, al-Hasan ibn 'Atiyyah narrated to us, Isra'il narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, Qatadah, al-Suddi, and al-Rabi' ibn Anas, similar to that.
1328 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, al-Hasan ibn 'Atiyyah narrated to us, Isra'il narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, he said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) had prayed towards Bayt al-Maqdis for sixteen or seventeen months, and he loved that he should be directed towards the Ka'bah. So Allah the Almighty revealed: "We have certainly seen the turning of your face toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a qibla with which you will be pleased. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram." He said: So he was directed towards the Ka'bah. The foolish among the people—they are the Jews—said: "What has turned them away from their qibla which they used to face?" So Allah revealed: "Say, 'To Allah belongs the east and the west. He guides whom He wills to a straight path.'"
1329 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, that when the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) migrated to Medina, Allah commanded him to face Bayt al-Maqdis, so the Jews rejoiced, and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) faced it for ten and some months. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) loved the qibla of Ibrahim, so he used to supplicate to Allah and look towards the heaven, so Allah revealed: "What has turned them away from their qibla which they used to face?" Then Allah the Almighty revealed: "So turn your faces in its direction," meaning towards it. The Jews were skeptical of that and said: "Say, 'To Allah belongs the east and the west. He guides whom He wills to a straight path.'"
1330 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad informed us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far narrated to us, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah, regarding the saying of Allah: "He guides whom He wills to a straight path," he says: He guides them to the way out of doubts, misguidance, and tribulations.
His saying: "And thus We have made you a just nation"
1331 - Al-Hasan ibn 'Arafah, Ahmad ibn Sinan, and al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us.
