His saying: "The Book"

54 - Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us, Asbat ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from al-Hudhali—meaning Abu Bakr—from al-Hasan regarding the saying of Allah: "The Book," he said: "The Quran." Abu Muhammad said: And it is narrated from Ibn 'Abbas the same.

His saying: "No doubt in it"

55 - My father narrated to us, Abu al-Yaman al-Hakam ibn Nafi' narrated to us, Hurayz ibn 'Uthman narrated to us, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi 'Awf, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mas'ud al-Fazari, from Abu al-Darda' who said: "Al-Rayb—meaning doubt—is from disbelief." Abu Muhammad said: I do not know of any disagreement on this term among the exegetes, including Ibn 'Abbas, Sa'id ibn Jubayr, Abu Malik, Nafi' the freed slave of Ibn 'Umar, 'Ata' ibn Abi Rabah, Abu al-'Aliyah, al-Rabi' ibn Anas, Qatadah, Muqatil ibn Hayyan, al-Suddi, and Isma'il ibn Abi Khalid.

[His saying: Guidance]

There is a difference of opinion regarding its interpretation, based on several points:

[The first interpretation]

Some say: Guidance from misguidance.

56 - Al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, al-Thawri informed me, from Bayan.

57 - And my father narrated to us, Abu Nu'aym and 'Isa ibn Ja'far narrated to us, they said: Sufyan narrated to us, from Bayan, from al-Sha'bi regarding His saying: "Guidance," he said: "From misguidance."

[The second interpretation]

Those who interpret it as light:

58 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad ibn Talhah al-Qannad narrated to us, Asbat ibn Nasr narrated to us, from al-Suddi: "As for 'guidance for the righteous,' it means light for the righteous."

[The third interpretation]

Those who interpret it as a clarification for the righteous:

59 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bukayr narrated to us, Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to us, from 'Ata' ibn Dinar, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr: "Guidance for the righteous" means a clarification for the righteous.
