Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 1 · Page 271His saying: 'Satan'

Translation · EN

1507 - My father narrated to us, Yahya ibn al-Mughirah narrated to us, Jarir informed us, from Sulayman al-Taymi, from Abu Mijlaz, regarding His saying: "And do not follow the footsteps of Satan," he said: Vows [to commit] acts of disobedience.

1508 - My father narrated to us, Thabit ibn Muhammad al-Zahid narrated to us, Husayn al-Ju'fi narrated to us, from al-Qasim ibn al-Walid al-Hamdani, who said: I asked Qatadah about the saying of Allah—I said: "What do you say about His saying: 'And do not follow the footsteps of Satan'?" He said: "Every act of disobedience to Allah is one of the footsteps of Satan." It is also reported from al-Suddi something similar to the statement of Qatadah.

His saying: "The Satan"

1509 - My father narrated to us, Khalid ibn Khidash al-Muhallabi narrated to us, Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from al-Zubayr ibn Khurayth, from 'Ikrimah, who said: He was only named "Satan" (al-Shaytan) because he became rebellious/insubordinate (tashaytana).

1510 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding "He only commands you to evil," he said: "Evil" means disobedience.

His saying: "And indecency, and that you say about Allah what you do not know."

And by this chain, from al-Suddi: "And indecency," he said: As for "indecency," it is adultery.

His saying: "And when it is said to them, 'Follow what Allah has revealed,' they say, 'Rather, we will follow that which we found...'

1511 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan informed us, Salamah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: And Muhyi ibn Abi Muhammad, i.e., the freed slave of the family of Zayd ibn Thabit, narrated to me, from 'Ikrimah and Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) invited the Jews to Islam and encouraged them toward it, and warned them of the punishment of Allah and His vengeance. So Rafi' ibn Kharijah and Malik ibn 'Awf said to him: "Rather, we will follow, O Muhammad, that upon which we found our fathers; they were more knowledgeable and better than us." So Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, revealed regarding their statement: "And when it is said to them, 'Follow what Allah has revealed,' they say, 'Rather, we will follow that which we found our fathers upon.' Even if their fathers did not understand anything and were not guided?"

1512 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far narrated to us, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah: "That which we found," meaning: what we found. It was reported from Qatadah and al-Rabi' something similar.
