Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 1 · Page 277His saying: 'are in far dissension'

Translation · EN

His saying: "In long-standing dissension."

Through the same chain from al-Suddi: "In long-standing dissension," he says: In long-standing enmity.

His saying: "Righteousness is not..."

I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl ibn Musa, Muhammad ibn 'Ali ibn al-Hasan ibn Shaqiq narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim narrated to us, Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf narrated to us, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, regarding His saying: "Righteousness is not..." meaning: Piety.

His saying: "That you turn your faces toward the east and the west"

1539 - My father narrated to us, 'Ubayd ibn Hisham al-Halabi narrated to us, 'Ubayd Allah ibn 'Amr narrated to us, from 'Amir ibn Shufayy, from 'Abd al-Karim, from Mujahid, from Abu Dharr, that he asked the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace: "What is faith?" He recited to him: "Righteousness is not that you turn your faces..." to the end of the verse. Then he asked him again, so he recited it to him. Then he asked him again, so he said: "When you do a good deed, your heart loves it, and when you do an evil deed, your heart dislikes it."

1540 - Muhammad ibn Sa'd al-'Awfi informed us in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my uncle al-Husayn narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, from 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east and the west," meaning: Prayer. He says: Righteousness is not that you turn your faces to pray while you do not perform [the obligatory acts]. This was since he moved from Makkah to al-Madinah, and the obligatory duties were revealed and the limits were defined, so Allah commanded the obligatory duties, and he acted upon them. It is reported from al-Dahhak and Muqatil ibn Hayyan something similar.

1541 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, from Abu Ja'far, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah, he said: The Jews used to turn toward the west, and the Christians used to turn toward the east, so Allah said: "Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east and the west," he says: This is the speech of faith and the reality of action. It is reported from al-Hasan and al-Rabi' ibn Anas something similar.

His saying: "But righteousness is..."

1542 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "But righteousness is..." what is established in the hearts from the obedience of Allah.
