His saying: "And eat and drink."
1684 - Muhammad ibn Sa‘d al-‘Awfi informed us in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my uncle al-Husayn narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather, from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abbas regarding "And eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinct to you from the black thread," he means: the night and the day. Intercourse, eating, and drinking were permitted for you until the morning (subh) becomes distinct; when the morning becomes distinct, it becomes forbidden for them.
1685 - ‘Ali ibn al-Mubarak informed us in what he wrote to me, Zayd narrated to us, Ibn Thawr narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj regarding "And eat and drink," he said: "It was revealed concerning Abu Qays ibn Sirmah of the Banu al-Khazraj."
His saying: "Until the white thread becomes distinct to you from the black thread of the dawn (al-fajr)."
1686 - Abu Sa‘id al-Ashaj narrated to us, Abu Usamah narrated to us, from Mujalid, from al-Sha‘bi, from ‘Adi ibn Hatim, he said: "I came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and I embraced Islam. He taught me Islam and said: 'Pray such and such, and when the month of Ramadan comes, then fast. When it is night, eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinct to you from the black thread.' I said: 'Two threads, white and black?' I began to look at them, and I began to distinguish each one of them from the other. I came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and told him. He laughed and said: 'O Ibn Hatim, did I not tell you: "of the dawn (al-fajr)"? It is only the whiteness of the day and the blackness of the night.'"
1687 - My father narrated to us, Ibn Abi Maryam narrated to us, Abu Ghassan, meaning Muhammad ibn Mutarrif, informed us, Abu Hazim narrated to me, from Sahl ibn Sa‘d, he said: "This verse was revealed: 'And eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinct to you from the black thread.' He said: 'And [the words] "of the dawn" were not yet revealed. So, when men wanted to fast, one of them would tie a white thread and a black thread to his legs and would continue to eat and drink until he could distinguish between them. Then Allah revealed after that: "of the dawn," so they knew that He only meant by that the night and the day.'"
His saying: "Of the dawn."
1688 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Yunus narrated to us, Isra’il narrated to us, from Jabir, from ‘Amir, from ‘Ata’, and he said: "I discussed the dawn with them, and they both said: 'The white dawn... the one below it.'"
