Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 1 · Page 311The second aspect

Translation · EN

Then the Muslims said: "Indeed, Allah has forbidden us from consuming our wealth among ourselves unjustly, and food is among the best of our wealth, so it is not permissible for any of us to eat at another's house." So people refrained from that. Then Allah revealed after that: "There is no blame upon the blind."

[The second interpretation]

1701 - ‘Ali ibn al-Mundhir narrated to us, Ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from Dawud al-Awdi, from ‘Amir, from ‘Alqamah, from ‘Abd Allah regarding: "And do not consume one another's wealth unjustly," he said: "It is a definitive ruling; it was not abrogated and will not be abrogated until the Day of Resurrection."

The third interpretation:

1702 - Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn ‘Abd Allah narrated to us, Ibn Lahi‘ah narrated to me, ‘Ata’ ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, regarding the saying of Allah: "And do not consume one another's wealth unjustly," meaning: through oppression. This is because Imru’ al-Qays ibn ‘Abis and ‘Abd Allah ibn Ashwa‘ al-Hadrami disputed over a piece of land, and Imru’ al-Qays wanted to swear an oath, so regarding that, this was revealed: "And do not consume one another's wealth unjustly." It was reported from al-Suddi and Muqatil ibn Hayyan similarly to that.

The fourth interpretation:

1703 - My father narrated to us, Hajjaj al-Anmati narrated to us, Hammad narrated to us, from Dawud ibn Abi Hind, from ‘Ikrimah, that Ibn ‘Abbas used to dislike that a man would sell a garment and say to its owner: "If you dislike it, return it with a dirham [as a penalty]." He said: "This is among what Allah said: 'And do not consume one another's wealth unjustly.'"

His saying: "And [do not] present it to the rulers."

1704 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu‘awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn ‘Abbas, regarding His saying: "And present it to the rulers," he said: "This concerns a man who owes a debt for which there is no evidence against him, so he denies the debt and disputes the case against them [the creditors] before the rulers, even though he knows that the right is against him and he knows that he is a sinner consuming what is forbidden."

It was reported from Mujahid, Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, al-Hasan, Qatadah, and Muqatil ibn Hayyan that they said: "Do not dispute when you know that you are an oppressor."
