their backs." He said: There were groups from the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era) who, if one of them intended to travel or left his house intending the journey for which he set out, and then it occurred to him after leaving it to stay behind and abandon the journey for which he had set out, he would not enter the house through its door; rather, he would climb over it from the back. So Allah said: "It is not righteousness that you enter houses from their backs, but righteousness is [for] one who fears Allah, and enter houses from their doors, and fear Allah that you may succeed."
The fourth interpretation:
1713 - It was mentioned from Zayd ibn al-Hubab, from Musa ibn ‘Ubaydah al-Rabadhi, who said: I heard Muhammad ibn Ka‘b al-Qurazi saying: A man, if he performed i‘tikaf (seclusion in the mosque), would not enter his home through the door of the house, so Allah revealed: "And it is not righteousness that you enter houses from their backs."
The fifth interpretation:
1714 - ‘Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, from Abu Shaybah, from ‘Ata’, who said: The people of Yathrib, when they returned from their ‘Eid, would enter their houses from their backs, and they believed that this was closer to righteousness. So Allah the Almighty said: "And it is not righteousness that you enter houses from their backs."
His saying: "But righteousness is [for] one who fears Allah"
1715 - al-‘Abbas ibn al-Walid ibn Mazid al-Bayruti reported to us by way of reading to him, Ibn Shu‘ayb informed me, ‘Uthman ibn ‘Ata’ informed me, from his father, ‘Ata’, regarding "And it is not righteousness that you enter houses from their backs, but righteousness is [for] one who fears Allah," he said: Righteousness is only that you fear Allah.
His saying: "And enter houses from their doors, and fear Allah that you may succeed."
1716 - Muhammad ibn Sa‘id al-‘Awfi reported to us in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my uncle al-Husayn narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn ‘Abbas, regarding His saying: "And enter houses from their doors, and fear Allah that you may succeed," He permitted the believers to enter from their doors.
His saying: "And fear Allah"
1717 - Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Bukayr narrated to us, Ibn Lahi‘ah narrated to me, ‘Ata’ narrated to me, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, regarding the saying of Allah: "And fear Allah," meaning the believers, He is warning them.
