my father narrated to me, my uncle al-Husayn narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and the veil is over their vision."

101 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi regarding: "And over their vision is a veil," he says: A veil has been placed over their vision, meaning upon their eyes, so they do not see.

His saying: "And for them is a great punishment"

102 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Minjab ibn al-Harith narrated to us, Bishr ibn 'Umarah narrated to us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying "punishment," he says: An exemplary punishment (nakal).

103 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl ibn Musa, Muhammad ibn 'Ali narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim informed us, from Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan regarding His saying: "And for them is a great punishment," meaning: an abundant punishment.

His saying, Exalted is He: "And of the people are some who say, 'We believe in Allah and the Last Day,'"

104 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan Muhammad ibn 'Amr Zunayj informed us, Salamah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq who said regarding what Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad narrated to me, from 'Ikrimah or Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas: "And of the people are some who say, 'We believe in Allah and the Last Day,' but they are not believers," meaning: the hypocrites from the Aws and the Khazraj, and whoever was of their disposition.

105 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad ibn al-Jarrah narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far al-Razi narrated to us, from al-Rabi' ibn Anas, from Abu al-'Aliyah regarding His saying: "And of the people are some who say, 'We believe in Allah and the Last Day,' but they are not believers," he said: These are the hypocrites. Abu Muhammad said: And likewise, it was interpreted by al-Hasan, Qatadah, and al-Suddi.

His saying, Exalted is He: "But they are not believers"

106 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bukayr narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, 'Ata' ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding His saying: "But they are not believers," he said: [meaning] they are not sincere/truthful (musaddiqin).

His saying: "They seek to deceive Allah"

107 - 'Ali ibn al-Mubarak informed me in what he wrote to me, Zayd ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Thawr narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj regarding His saying "They seek to deceive Allah," he said: They manifest "there is no god but Allah," wishing thereby to safeguard their blood and their wealth, while in their inner selves, it is otherwise.
