1763 - 'Amr ibn 'Abd Allah al-Awdi narrated to us, Waki' narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from Nafi', from Ibn 'Umar, who said: The 'Umrah is mandatory. It was also narrated from 'Ata', Makhul, al-Hasan, Ibn Sirin, Tawus, Mujahid, Sa'id ibn Jubayr, al-Dahhak, 'Abd Allah ibn Shaddad, Muqatil ibn Hayyan, and Qatadah, that they said: The 'Umrah is mandatory.
Those who said that the 'Umrah is voluntary:
1764 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Abu Khalid narrated to us, from Hajjaj, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was asked about the 'Umrah: Is it mandatory? He said: No, and for you to perform the 'Umrah is better for you.
1765 - 'Amr ibn 'Abd Allah al-Awdi narrated to us, Waki' narrated to us, from Ibn 'Awn, from al-Sha'bi, that he recited it as: "And complete the Hajj and the 'Umrah for Allah," meaning: by vocalizing the 'ta' with a damma. It was also narrated from al-Sha'bi and Abu Burdah ibn Abi Musa that they said: The 'Umrah is a sunnah. Some of them said: It is voluntary.
His saying: "But if you are prevented (ihsartum)"
1766 - Ahmad ibn Sinan al-Wasiti narrated to us, Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, al-A'mash narrated to us, from Ibrahim, from 'Alqamah, regarding His saying: "But if you are prevented," he said: If a man enters the state of ihram for Hajj and is then prevented, he should send whatever is easily available of the sacrificial animal, a sheep. Ibrahim said: I mentioned that to Sa'id ibn Jubayr, and he said: That is what Ibn 'Abbas said. In all of this, those who interpreted 'ihsar' (being prevented) include [the cases of] illness, injury, or being held back.
1767 - al-Hasan ibn 'Arafah narrated to us, Isma'il ibn 'Ulayyah narrated to us, from al-Hajjaj ibn Abi 'Uthman, Yahya ibn Abi Kathir told me that 'Ikrimah, the mawla of Ibn 'Abbas, told him, and al-Hajjaj ibn 'Amr al-Ansari told me that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saying: "Whoever is injured or lame has exited the state of ihram, and he owes another Hajj." I related this to Ibn 'Abbas and Abu Hurayrah, and they both said: He spoke the truth. It was also narrated from Ibn Mas'ud, Ibn al-Zubayr, 'Alqamah, Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, 'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, Mujahid, al-Nakha'i, 'Ata', and Muqatil ibn Hayyan, that they said: 'Ihsar' is caused by an enemy, illness, or injury. al-Thawri said: 'Ihsar' is caused by anything that causes harm.
