Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 1 · Page 33[Surah al-Baqarah (2): Verse 10]

Translation · EN

108 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, Yazid ibn Zuray' narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Abi 'Arubah narrated to us, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "And of the people are some who say, 'We believe in Allah and the Last Day,' but they are not believers. They seek to deceive Allah and those who believe, but they deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not." [He said regarding] the description of the hypocrite: [One who has] corrupt morals, confirms with his tongue while denying in his heart, contradicts with his deeds, wakes up in one state and is called [by] another, and is called [by] one state and wakes up in another. He wavers like a ship; whenever a wind blows, he blows with it.

[His saying, Exalted is He: "In their hearts is disease"]

[The first aspect]

109 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr al-Maqdisi narrated to us, 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Abd al-Samad narrated to us, from Malik ibn Dinar, from 'Ikrimah regarding "In their hearts is disease," he said: [It means] adultery (zina).

110 - Ahmad ibn Mansur al-Ramadi narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar narrated to us, from Ibn Tawus, from his father regarding "In their hearts is disease," he said: That pertains to some matters of women.

The second aspect:

111 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Minjab ibn al-Harith narrated to us, Bishr ibn 'Umarah informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding "In their hearts is disease," he said: The disease is hypocrisy (nifaq).

The third aspect:

112 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan Muhammad ibn 'Amr informed us, Salamah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq who said regarding what Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad narrated to us, from 'Ikrimah or Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas: "In their hearts is disease," meaning doubt.

113 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad ibn al-Jarrah al-'Asqalani narrated to us, Adam ibn Abi Iyas narrated to us, Abu Ja'far al-Razi narrated to us, from al-Rabi' ibn Anas, from Abu al-'Aliyah: Allah says: "In their hearts is disease," meaning doubt. Abu Muhammad said: And likewise it was narrated from Mujahid, al-Hasan, 'Ikrimah, al-Rabi' ibn Anas, al-Suddi, and Qatadah.

His saying: "Then Allah increased their disease"
