186 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih the scribe of al-Layth narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding "thunder," he says: It is a warning.
The third interpretation:
187 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Ibn Idris narrated to us, from al-Hasan ibn Furat, from his father, from Abu al-Jald, he said: Ibn 'Abbas wrote to him asking him about thunder, and he wrote back to him: Thunder is a wind.

189 - 'Ali ibn al-Mundhir al-Tariqi narrated to us, Ibn Fudayl narrated to us, 'Ata' ibn al-Sa'ib narrated to us, from al-Sha'bi, he said: Ibn 'Abbas wrote to Abu al-Jald asking him about lightning—and he was a scholar who read the scriptures—so he wrote back to him: Lightning is from the shimmering of the water.
The second interpretation:
190 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Abu Nu'aym narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Salamah ibn Kuhayl, from Ibn Ashya', from Rabi'ah ibn al-Abyad, from 'Ali, he said: Lightning is the fire-brands of the angels.
191 - My father narrated to us, Sulayman ibn Harb and Abu al-Rabi' narrated to us—the wording is Sulayman's—they said: Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from 'Abd al-Jalil, from Shahr ibn Hawshab, from Abu Hurayrah, that he was asked about lightning, and he said: It is the clapping of hail.

الزُّبَيْرِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ- يَعْنِي مِنْ وَلَدِ مَعْقِلِ بْنِ مُقَرِّنٍ- حَدَّثَنِي بُكَيْرُ بْنُ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: أَقْبَلَتْ يَهُودُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالُوا: يَا أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ، أَخْبِرْنَا مَا هَذَا الرَّعْدُ؟ قَالَ: مَلَكٌ مِنْ مَلائِكَةِ اللَّهِ مُوَكَّلٌ بِالسَّحَابِ بِيَدِهِ، أَوْ فِي يَدِهِ مَخَارِيقُ مِنْ نَارٍ يَزْجُرُ بِهِ السَّحَابَ وَيَسُوقُهُ حَيْثُ أَمَرَهُ اللَّهُ. قَالُوا: فَمَا هَذَا الصَّوْتُ الَّذِي يُسْمَعُ؟ قَالَ: صَوْتُهُ. قَالُوا: صَدَقْتَ «١»

١٨٦ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا أَبُو صَالِحٍ كَاتِبُ اللَّيْثِ، حَدَّثَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، وَرَعْدٌ يَقُولُ: تَخْوِيفٌ.

١٨٧ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الأَشَجُّ، ثنا ابْنُ إِدْرِيسَ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ فُرَاتٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي الْجَلْدِ قَالَ: كَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ يَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ الرَّعْدِ، فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ: إِنَّ الرَّعْدَ رِيحٌ.

١٨٨ - وَبِهِ عَنْ أَبِي الْجَلْدِ قَالَ: كَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ يَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ الْبَرْقِ، فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ أَنّ الْبَرْقَ مَاءٌ.
١٨٩ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمُنْذِرِ الطَّرِيقِيُّ، ثنا ابْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، ثنا عَطَاءُ بْنُ السَّائِبِ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ قَالَ: كَتَبَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ إِلَى أَبِي الْجَلْدِ يَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ الْبَرْقِ- وَكَانَ عَالِمًا يقرأ الكتب- فكتب إليه. البرق من تلالؤ الْمَاءِ.

١٩٠ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الأَشَجُّ، ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بن كهيل عن ابن أشيء، عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ الأَبْيَضِ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ: الْبَرْقُ مَخَارِيقُ الْمَلائِكَةِ.
١٩١ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ وَأَبُو الرَّبِيعِ- وَاللَّفْظُ لِسُلَيْمَانَ قَالا: ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْجَلِيلِ، عَنْ شَهْرِ بْنِ حَوْشَبٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنِ الْبَرْقِ، فَقَالَ: اصْطِفَقُ الْبَرَدِ.
