210 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad al-'Asqalani narrated to us there, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far narrated to us, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah, regarding His saying: "Whenever it lights for them, they walk therein, and when it darkens upon them, they stand [still]." He said: Its likeness is the likeness of a people who traveled on a dark night accompanied by rain, thunder, and lightning, upon a road. Whenever it flashed, they saw the road and walked along it; but when the lightning disappeared, they were bewildered. Thus is the hypocrite: whenever he speaks the word of sincerity, it lights up for him, and whenever he doubts, he becomes bewildered and falls into darkness. Abu Muhammad said: Something similar has been narrated from al-Hasan, Qatadah, al-Suddi, and al-Rabi' ibn Anas.
His saying: "And when it darkens upon them, they stand [still]"
211 - Muhammad ibn Yahya (Abu Ghassan) narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq who said, regarding what Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad narrated to me, from 'Ikrimah or Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas: "And when it darkens upon them, they stand [still]"—meaning they are bewildered.
His saying: "And if Allah willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight"
212 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far narrated to us, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah: "And if Allah willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight." He said: He mentioned their hearing and their sight with which they wrought mischief among the people.
213 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan informed us, Salamah ibn al-Fadl narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq who said, regarding what Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad narrated to us, from 'Ikrimah or Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas: "And if Allah willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight"—meaning because of what they abandoned of the Truth after having known it. "Indeed, Allah is over all things competent."
His saying: "Indeed, Allah is over all things competent"
214 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Amr (Zunayj) narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us. Muhammad ibn Ishaq said: "Indeed, Allah is over all things competent"—meaning indeed Allah is competent over all He intends for His servants, whether punishment or pardon.
His saying, the Almighty: "O mankind"
215 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan informed us, Salamah ibn al-Fadl narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq who said: Regarding what Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad narrated to me, from 'Ikrimah or Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas: "O mankind"—meaning both groups, the disbelievers and the hypocrites.

٢١٠ - حَدَّثَنَا عِصَامُ بْنُ رَوَّادٍ الْعَسْقَلانِيُّ بِهَا، ثنا آدَمُ، ثنا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ، عَنِ الرَّبِيعِ، عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ، فِي قَوْلِهِ: كُلَّمَا أَضَاءَ لَهُمْ مَشَوْا فِيهِ وَإِذَا أَظْلَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ قَامُوا فَمَثَلُهُ كَمَثَلِ قَوْمٍ سَارُوا فِي لَيْلَةٍ مُظْلِمَةٍ لَهَا مَطَرٌ وَرَعْدٌ وَبَرْقٌ عَلَى جَادَّةٍ كُلَّمَا أَبْرَقَتْ أَبْصَرُوا الْجَادَّةَ فَمَضَوْا فِيهَا، فَإِذَا ذَهَبَ الْبَرْقُ تَحَيَّرُوا، فَكَذَلِكَ الْمُنَافِقُ كُلَّمَا تَكَلَّمَ بِكَلِمَةِ الإِخْلاصِ أَضَاءَ لَهُ، وَكُلَّمَا شَكَّ تَحَيَّرَ وَوَقَعَ فِي الظُّلْمَةِ. قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ: وَرُوِيَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، وَقَتَادَةِ، وَالسُّدِّيِّ، وَالرَّبِيعِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ نَحْوُ ذلك.
قوله: وإذا أَظْلَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ قَامُوا
٢١١ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، أَبُو غَسَّانَ، ثنا سَلَمَةُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ:
فِيمَا حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ، بْنُ أَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ أَوْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ:
وَإِذَا أَظْلَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ قَامُوا أَيْ مُتَحَيِّرِينَ «١» .
قَوْلُهُ: وَلَوْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَذَهَبَ بِسَمْعِهِمْ وَأَبْصَارِهِمْ

٢١٣ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، أَنْبَأَ أَبُو غَسَّانَ، ثنا سَلَمَةُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ، عَنْ محمد ابن إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ: فِيمَا حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ أَوْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ: وَلَوْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَذَهَبَ بِسَمْعِهِمْ وَأَبْصَارِهِمْ أَيْ لِمَا تَرَكُوا مِنَ الْحَقِّ بَعْدَ مَعْرِفَتِهِ، إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ.
قَوْلُهُ: إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
٢١٤ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو زُنَيْجٌ، ثنا سَلَمَةُ، قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ: إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ أَيْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ مَا أَرَادَ بِعِبَادِهِ مِنْ نِقْمَةٍ أَوْ عَفْوٍ قَدِيرٌ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ
