Ishaq, who said: Regarding what Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad narrated to me, from 'Ikrimah or Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas: "O mankind"—meaning both groups, the disbelievers and the hypocrites.

His saying: "Worship your Lord"

216 - And through the same chain from Ibn 'Abbas: His saying "O mankind, worship your Lord"—meaning, profess the oneness of your Lord.

His saying: "Who created you and those before you"

217 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi: "O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you." He says: He created you and created those who were before you. Something similar has been narrated from Mujahid.

His saying: "That you might"

218 - Musa ibn Abi Musa al-Ansari narrated to us, Harun ibn Hatim narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hammad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, from Abu Malik. Regarding His saying: "That you might"—he refers to another verse in [Surat] al-Shu'ara' (The Poets): "that you might become immortal," meaning, as if you would become immortal.

His saying: "That you might become righteous"

[The first interpretation]

219 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad al-'Asqalani narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Safwan al-Qasim ibn Yazid ibn 'Awanah narrated to us, from Yahya Abu al-Nadr, Juwaybir narrated to us, from al-Dahhak, regarding His saying: "That you might become righteous." He said: He means, that you might protect yourselves from the Fire through the five prayers.

The second interpretation:

220 - Musa ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Masruqi narrated to us, Abu Dawud al-Hafari narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid: "That you might become righteous"—that you might obey Him.

His saying, the Almighty: "[He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out]"

221 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad al-'Asqalani narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far—meaning al-Razi—narrated to us, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah: "[He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out]." He said: A resting place (mihad).
