314 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding [His saying]: "And [mention] when your Lord said to the angels, 'Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority' [Khalifah]," he said: He consulted the angels regarding the creation of Adam. A similar account was narrated from Qatadah.

His saying: "Indeed, I will make [Ja'il]."

315 - Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Sulayman narrated to us, Mubarak ibn Fudalah narrated to us, al-Hasan said: Allah said to the angels: "Indeed, I will make [Ja'il] upon the earth a successive authority [Khalifah]," He said to them: "Indeed, I am doing [Fa'il]."

316 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas, the freed slave of Banu Hashim, narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah narrated to us, Salamah—meaning Ibn al-Fadl—narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to me: His saying "Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority [Khalifah]," he says: a dweller and an inhabitant; a creation who will dwell in it and inhabit it, not from among you.

His saying: "Upon the earth."

317 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salamah narrated to us, Hammad narrated to us, 'Ata' ibn al-Sa'ib informed us, from Ibn Sabit, that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "The earth was spread out from Makkah, and the first to circumambulate the House [the Ka'bah] were the angels." He then said: "Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority [Khalifah]," meaning Makkah.

318 - Ahmad ibn 'Isam al-Ansari and Humayd ibn 'Ayyash narrated to us, they both said: Mu'ammal narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah and Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Khalid al-Hadhdha', he said: I asked al-Hasan and said: "O Abu Sa'id, was Adam created for the heaven or the earth?" He said: "Do you not read the Qur'an? 'Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority [Khalifah].' No, rather, he was created for the earth."

His saying: "A successive authority [Khalifah]."

319 - 'Amr ibn 'Abd Allah al-Awdi narrated to us, Waki' narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Salim ibn Abi Hafsah, from a man, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: Allah brought Adam out from Paradise before He made him dwell in it, then he recited: "Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority [Khalifah]."
