Volume 1 · Page 79His saying: As enemies to one another

Translation · EN

394 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, Jarir narrated to us, from 'Ata', from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: Adam—peace be upon him—was made to descend to a land called Dahna, between Makkah and Ta'if.

395 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Hisham ibn 'Amr al-Ghassani narrated to us, 'Abbad ibn Maysarah narrated to us, from al-Hasan, he said: Adam was made to descend in India, Hawwa' (Eve) in Jeddah, and Iblis in Dust Misan of Basra, several miles away, and the serpent was made to descend in Isfahan.

396 - My father informed me, Ayyub ibn Muhammad al-Raqqi narrated to me, Damrah narrated to us, from al-Sari—that is, Ibn Yahya—he said: Adam was made to descend from Paradise, and he had with him some seeds, and Iblis placed his hand upon them, so whatever his hand touched lost its benefit.

397 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, he said: Allah said: "Descend, all of you." So they descended, and Adam landed in India, and the Black Stone was brought down with him, along with a handful of the leaves of Paradise, which he scattered in India, and thus the aromatic trees grew. Indeed, the origin of what is brought of aromatics from India comes from that handful of leaves with which Adam descended. Adam had only grasped them when he was removed from Paradise out of sorrow for Paradise at the time he was removed from it.

His saying: "[as] enemies to one another"

398 - Yunus ibn 'Abd al-A'la informed us by recitation, Ibn Wahb informed me, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to me, from Isra'il, from Isma'il al-Suddi, he who heard Ibn 'Abbas say: "[as] enemies to one another"—he said: Adam, Hawwa', Iblis, and the serpent.

His saying: "And for you on the earth is a place of settlement"

399 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, 'Ubayd Allah ibn Musa narrated to us, Isra'il reported to us, from al-Suddi, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "And for you on the earth is a place of settlement," he said: The place of settlement is the graves.

400 - My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Hatim al-Zimmi narrated to us, 'Ubaydah ibn Humayd narrated to us, from 'Ammar al-Duhni, from Humayd al-Madani, from Kurayb, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "And for you on the earth is a place of settlement," he said: A place of settlement above the earth, and a place of settlement beneath the earth.

Notes

(1). Ibn Kathir said: If there were any benefit in specifying those locations for those who are held responsible (mukallafin) regarding the affairs of their religion or their worldly life, Allah the Almighty would have mentioned it in His Book, or His Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, would have done so. Indeed, these reports are among the Isra'iliyyat (tales from the People of the Book) 3/395.
