When the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was taken on the Night Journey (al-Mi'raj), he passed by a people whose lips were being cut off with shears. He said: "O Gabriel, who are these?" He replied: "These are the preachers from your nation who order people to perform righteousness while forgetting themselves, and they recite the Book but do not understand (it)."
His saying: "And you recite the Book, then will you not reason?"
473 - By way of him, from Ibn 'Abbas: "And you recite the Book, then will you not reason?" meaning: Do you disbelieve in what is in it of My covenant to you regarding confirming My Messenger, thereby breaking My covenant and denying what you know from My Book?
His saying: "Then will you not reason?"
474 - Abu Zayd al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj informed us: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam from his father regarding His saying: "Then will you not reason?" [meaning:] Do you not reflect?
475 - 'Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Abi al-Khasib al-Kufi narrated to us, Waki' narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Abu Ishaq, from Jurayy ibn Kulayb, from a man from Banu Sulaym, from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who said: "Fasting is half of patience (sabr)."
476 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan informed us, Salamah ibn al-Fadl narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to me, saying: In what Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad narrated to me, from 'Ikrimah or Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas: "Do you order the people to perform righteousness and forget yourselves while you recite the Book, then will you not reason?" [meaning:] You forbid people from disbelief while you possess prophecy and the covenant from the Torah.
477 - Al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, Ma'mar informed us from Qatadah regarding His saying: "Do you order the people to perform righteousness and forget yourselves?" He said: The Children of Israel used to command people to obey Allah, fear Him, and perform righteousness, yet they would contradict [themselves], so Allah rebuked them.
478 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us from al-Suddi: "Do you order the people to perform righteousness and forget yourselves while you recite the Book?" He said: They used to command people to obey Him, while they themselves disobeyed Him.
