are looking. He said: When Moses went out with the Children of Israel, news of that reached Pharaoh, and he said: "Do not follow them until the rooster crows." He said: By Allah, no rooster crowed that night until morning. Then he called for a sheep, and it was slaughtered. Then he said: "I shall not finish its liver before six hundred thousand of the Copts have gathered to me." And he did not finish before six hundred thousand of the Copts had gathered to him. Then he set out. When he arrived at Moses, a man from his companions called Yusha' ibn Nun (Joshua, son of Nun) said to him: "Where did your Lord command you, O Moses?" He said: "Ahead of you," pointing to the sea. Yusha' drove his horse into the sea until he reached the deep water, and the deep water took him. Then he returned and said: "Where did your Lord command you, O Moses? By Allah, you have not lied and I have not been lied to." He did this three times. Then Allah revealed to Moses: "Strike the sea with your staff." He struck it, and it parted, and every section was like a great mountain, meaning like a mountain. Then Moses and those with him set out, and Pharaoh followed them on their path until, when they had all entered it, Allah closed it over them. That is why He said: "And We drowned the people of Pharaoh while you were looking."

509 - Muhammad ibn 'Ubayd Allah ibn al-Munadi reported to us in what he wrote to me, Yunus ibn Muhammad al-Mu'addib narrated to us, Shayban al-Nahwi narrated to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "And when We parted for you the sea and saved you and drowned the people of Pharaoh while you were looking." He said: Yes, by Allah, He parted the sea for them until it became dry ground which they walked upon. So We saved them and drowned the people of Pharaoh, their enemy—favors from Allah that He made them aware of so that they might be grateful and recognize His right.

510 - 'Ammar ibn Khalid reported to us, Muhammad ibn al-Hasan and Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, from Asbagh ibn Zayd, from al-Qasim ibn Abi Ayyub, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: When the companions of Moses—peace be upon him—crossed the sea, they said: "We fear that Pharaoh may not have drowned, and we do not believe in his destruction." So he (Moses) prayed to his Lord, Blessed and Exalted is He, and He brought him out to them in his body so that they might be certain.

His saying: "And when We made an appointment with Moses for forty nights."

511 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far narrated to us, from al-Rabi' ibn Anas, from Abu al-'Aliyah regarding His saying: "And when We made an appointment with Moses for forty nights," meaning Dhu al-Qi'dah and ten days from Dhu al-Hijjah. That was when Moses left his companions behind and appointed Aaron as his successor over them. He remained on the Mount for forty nights, and the Torah was sent down to him on the tablets. The Lord brought him near as a confidant and spoke to him, and he heard the scratching of the Pen. It has reached us that he did not commit any sinful act during the forty nights until he descended from the Mount.
