His saying: "Then you took the calf [for worship] after him, while you were wrongdoers."
512 - Through the same chain from al-Rabi', he said: Abu al-'Aliyah said: It was only called the "calf" ('ijl) because they hastened ('ajjalū) and took it before Moses came to them.
513 - Al-Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid: His saying: "The calf" is the offspring of a cow—the calf of the cow.
His saying: "While you were wrongdoers."
514 - Through the same chain from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "Wrongdoers," he said: The companions of the calf.
His saying: "Then We forgave you after that."
515 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam Abu Ja'far al-Razi narrated to us, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah regarding His saying: "Then We forgave you after that," meaning after they had taken the calf. This has also been narrated from al-Rabi' ibn Anas.
His saying: "That you might."
516 - My father narrated to us, Ibn Abi 'Umar al-'Adani narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Mis'ar, from 'Awn ibn 'Abd Allah regarding His saying: "That you might" (la'allakum), he said: "La'alla" (that you might/perhaps) from Allah means it is binding (wajib).
517 - Abu Bakr ibn Abi Musa al-Kufi narrated to us, Harun ibn Hatim narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hammad narrated to us, from Asbat, from al-Suddi, from Abu Malik: His saying: "That you might" means "so that" (kay).
His saying: "Be grateful."
518 - Muhammad ibn Hibal al-Qahandazi reported to us in what he wrote to me, 'Umar—meaning Ibn 'Abd al-Ghaffar—narrated to us, he said: Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah said: It is upon every Muslim to thank his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, because Allah said: "That you might be grateful."
His saying: "And when We gave Moses the Scripture."
519 - My father narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Raja' narrated to us, 'Imran Abu al-'Awwam al-Qattan informed us, from Qatadah, from Abu al-Malih, from Wathilah, that the Prophet—peace and blessings of Allah be upon him—said: "The scrolls of Abraham were sent down on the first night of Ramadan, and the Torah was sent down on the sixth day passed of Ramadan."
