[The Importance of the Tafsir of Ibn Abi Hatim]
1- This Tafsir is distinguished by its collection, between its two covers, of the exegesis of the Book (Quran) through the Sunnah and the narrations (athar) of the Companions and the Successors with their chains of transmission (isnad).
2- He selected the most authentic chains of transmission.
3- It contains many narrations not found in the works of others with their chains of transmission, and he is unique in them. This is evidenced by the fact that when one collects his narrated reports, for example, from Al-Durr al-Manthur by al-Suyuti, we find that al-Suyuti mentions the narration without attributing it to anyone other than Ibn Abi Hatim, and likewise Ibn Kathir.
4- The Tafsir of Ibn Abi Hatim has preserved for us many lost exegeses, such as the Tafsir of Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, Muqatil ibn Hayyan, and others.
5- Most Tafsir works transmit from him many of the narrations and reports that he cited; he is thus a primary and relied-upon source for the majority of exegetical scholars in all eras after him.
[Ibn Abi Hatim’s Methodology in his Tafsir]
We observe his methodology from the introduction to his book, where he stated:
"I have endeavored to extract the Tafsir with the most authentic reports in terms of chain of transmission (isnad) and the most similar in terms of text (matn). If I find the exegesis from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, I do not mention along with it anyone among the Companions who provided something similar to that. If I find it from the Companions, then if they are in agreement, I mention the highest among them in status with the most authentic chains of transmission, and I name those who agree with them while omitting the chain of transmission. If they differ, I mention their disagreement and cite a chain of transmission for each one of them, and I name those who agree with them while omitting the chain of transmission. If I do not find it from the Companions and I find it from the Successors, I perform regarding what I find from them the same as what I have mentioned in the example of the Companions."
