The devils, mankind, jinn, birds, and beasts approached him. The devil who had been left behind in his household fled and went to an island in the sea. Sulayman sent the devils after him, and they said, "We cannot capture him; he comes to a spring on an island in the sea every seven days, and we cannot capture him until he becomes intoxicated." He said, "So pour wine for him into that spring." He came and drank until he became intoxicated, and they showed him the ring. He said, "I hear and obey." Sulayman, peace be upon him, bound him and then sent him to the mountain, and they mentioned that it was Mount Dukhan (Mountain of Smoke). The smoke that they see is from his breath, and the water that emerges from the mountain is his urine.
18357 - Regarding the [saying of the Almighty]: "And We placed on his throne a body," he [Al-Hasan] said: "It is the devil." Sulayman, peace be upon him, entered the bathhouse and placed his ring with a woman who was among the most trusted of his wives in his heart. The devil came to her, appeared in the image of Sulayman, peace be upon him, and took the ring from her. When Sulayman, peace be upon him, went out, he came to her and said, "Give me the ring." She replied, "I have already given it to you." He said, "I did not!" So Sulayman, peace be upon him, fled, and the devil sat on his throne. Sulayman, peace be upon him, went away as a fugitive in the land, following the leaves of trees for fifty nights. The Children of Israel suspected the affair of the devil, and some of them said to others, "Do you suspect what we suspect regarding the affair of your king?" They said, "Yes." He said, "As for you, the common people, you have perished, and as for your king, he has perished." They said, "By Allah, you have information about this. His wives are with you, so ask them. If they suspected what we suspected, then we have been tested." They asked them, and they said, "Yes, by Allah, we have suspected [the same]."
When his period ended, Sulayman, peace be upon him, set off until he arrived at the seashore. He found fishermen catching fish, and they had caught much fish; some of it had overwhelmed them, so they threw it away. Sulayman, peace be upon him, came to them and asked them for food, so they gave him those fish. He said, "No, rather feed me from this [fresh catch]." They refused. He said, "Feed me, for I am Sulayman." Some of them jumped at him with a staff and struck him in anger for [the sake of] Sulayman. He went to those fish they had discarded, took two fish from them, and went to the sea. He washed them and slit the belly of one of them, and behold, the ring was in it. He took it and placed it on his hand, and he returned to his kingdom. The fishermen came to sell to him, and he said to them, "I had asked you for food, and you did not feed me. So I did not wrong you when you humiliated me, and I did not praise you when you honored me."
