18358 - From Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "Sulayman, peace be upon him, did not raise his eyes to the heaven in humility after Allah, the Exalted, gave him what He gave him."

His saying, the Exalted: "Running by his command, gently [wherever he willed]."

18359 - From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, regarding His saying: "Running by his command, gently," he said: Obedient to him wherever he willed.

His saying, the Exalted: "And remember Our servant Ayyub, when he called to his Lord..." until His saying: "This is a cooling bath and a drink."

18360 - From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both: The devil ascended to heaven and said: "O Lord, grant me authority over Ayyub, peace be upon him." Allah said: "I have granted you authority over his wealth and his children, but I have not granted you authority over his body." He descended and gathered his soldiers, and said to them: "I have been granted authority over Ayyub, peace be upon him, so show me your power." They became fires, then they became water. While they were in the east, they were in the west; and while they were in the west, they were in the east. He sent a group of them to his crops, a group to his family, a group to his cattle, and a group to his sheep, and said: "He will not find refuge from you except by [good deeds]." They brought him calamities, one upon another. The one in charge of the crops came and said: "O Ayyub, do you not see that your Lord sent an enemy upon your crops and he took them away?" The one in charge of the camels came and said: "O Ayyub, do you not see that your Lord sent an enemy upon your cattle and he took them away?" He was left alone, having gathered his children in the house of the eldest among them.

While they were eating and drinking, a wind blew and seized the corners of the house, and collapsed it upon them. The devil came to Ayyub in the form of a youth and said: "O Ayyub, do you not see that your Lord gathered your children in the house of the eldest among them? While they were eating and drinking, a wind blew, seized the corners of the house, and collapsed it upon them. If only you had seen them when their blood and flesh were mixed with their food and drink!" Ayyub said to him: "You are the devil." Then he said to him: "I am today as the day my mother bore me." He stood up, shaved his head, and stood up to pray. Iblis let out a cry that was heard by the inhabitants of the heaven and the inhabitants of the earth, then he went out to heaven and said: "O Lord, he has found refuge, so grant me authority over him, for I cannot overcome him except by Your authority." He said: "I have granted you authority over his body, but I have not granted you authority over his heart." He descended and blew under his foot, causing sores that spread between his feet and his crown until he became one entire sore. He was thrown upon the ash heap until the veil of his heart was exposed. His wife would hasten to him until she said to him: "Do you not see, O Ayyub? By Allah, such distress and poverty have befallen me that if I sold my braids for a loaf of bread to feed you, I would. So invoke Allah to heal you and relieve you." He said: "Woe to you! We lived in luxury for seventy years, so be patient until we live in hardship for seventy years." He remained in this affliction for seven years, and he prayed.
