His saying, the Exalted: "Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves...'

18400 - From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, regarding His saying: "Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves'"—this is concerning the polytheists of the people of Mecca.

18401 - From Abu Sa'id, who said: When Wahshi accepted Islam, Allah sent down: "And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden, except by right." Wahshi and his companions said: "We have committed all of this." So Allah sent down: "Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves...'"—the verse.

18402 - My father narrated to us, Musa ibn Isma'il narrated to us, Hammad narrated to us, Thabit and Humayd reported to us from Abdullah ibn 'Ubayd ibn 'Umayr, who said: Iblis—may the curses of Allah be upon him—said: "O Lord, You have expelled me from Paradise because of Adam, and I have no power over him except with Your authority." He said: "You are granted authority over him." He said: "O Lord, increase me [in power]." He said: "No child will be born to him except that a like of him will be born to you." He said: "O Lord, increase me." He said: "I will make their chests homes for you, and you will run through them as blood runs." He said: "O Lord, increase me." He said: "Assault them with your cavalry and your infantry, and partner with them in wealth and children, and promise them; and Satan does not promise them except delusion." Adam said: "O Lord, You have given him authority over me, and I cannot resist except through You." He said: "No child will be born to you except that I will appoint someone to protect him from the devil's associates." He said: "O Lord, increase me." He said: "A good deed is [rewarded as] ten or more, and a bad deed is one, or I shall erase it." He said: "O Lord, increase me." He said: "The door of repentance is open as long as the soul is in the body." He said: "O Lord, increase me." He said: "'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'"

18403 - From Thawban, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saying: "I would not love that the world and what is in it be mine in exchange for this verse: 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves...' to the end of the verse." A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, what about one who associates partners with Allah?" The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, remained silent. He then said: "Behold! And even one who associates partners with Allah," three times.

18404 - From 'Ubayd ibn 'Umayr, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: Iblis said: "O Lord, increase me."
