what you see is due to a sin, and what Allah pardons is more." Then he recited this verse: "And whatever strikes you of disaster - it is for what your hands have earned; but He pardons much."

18483 - My father narrated to us, Yahya ibn Abd al-Hamid al-Himmani narrated to us, Jarir narrated to us, from Abu al-Bilad, who said: I said to al-Ala' ibn Badr: "(And whatever strikes you of disaster - it is for what your hands have earned) and I lost my sight when I was a boy?" He said: "Then it is for the sins of your parents."

18484 - My father narrated to us, Ali ibn Muhammad al-Tanafisi narrated to us, Waki' narrated to us, from Abd al-Aziz ibn Abi Rawwad, from al-Dahhak, who said: We do not know of anyone who memorized the Quran and then forgot it except due to a sin. Then al-Dahhak recited: "And whatever strikes you of disaster - it is for what your hands have earned; but He pardons much." Then al-Dahhak would say: "And what disaster is greater than forgetting the Quran?"

His saying, the Almighty: "...stationary" [al-shawra: 31] to His saying: "...or destroy them for what they earned."

18485 - From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both: "Stationary" (rawakid) means standing still. "Or destroy them" (aw yubiqhunna) means to cause them to perish.

His saying, the Almighty: "And those who, when tyranny strikes them, they defend themselves."

18486 - From Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "And those who, when tyranny strikes them, they defend themselves." He said: They used to dislike for the believers to be humiliated, and when they were capable, they would pardon.

His saying, the Almighty: "The cause is only against the ones who wrong the people and tyrannize upon the earth without right. Those will have a painful punishment."

18487 - Al-Hasan ibn Musa narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Zayd, the brother of Hammad ibn Zayd, narrated to us, Uthman al-Shahham narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Wasi' narrated to us, who said: I arrived in Makkah, and there was a checkpoint at the trench, so I was seized. I was brought to Marwan ibn al-Muhallab, who was the governor of Basra. He said: "What is your need, O Abu Abd Allah?" I said: "My need is that, if you are able, you should be as the brother of Banu Adi said." He said: "And who is the brother of Banu Adi?" He said: "Al-Ala' ibn Ziyad, who once appointed a friend of his to a position, and he wrote to him: 'After that, if you are able to spend the night such that your back is light, your stomach is empty, and your hand is clean from the blood of the Muslims and their wealth, then if you do that, there will be no cause against you. The cause is only against the ones who wrong the people and tyrannize upon the earth without right. Those will have a painful punishment.'" He said: "He spoke the truth.
