Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 10 · Page 142[Surat az-Zukhruf (43): Verse 20]

Translation · EN

"And they have made the angels, who are servants of the Most Merciful, females." He said: "Some people read it as 'who are with the Most Merciful,'" so he fell silent about it, and I said: "Go to your family!" (1)

His saying, the Almighty: "If the Most Merciful had willed, we would not have worshipped them."

18499 - From Mujahid regarding His saying: "And they said, 'If the Most Merciful had willed, we would not have worshipped them,'" he said: "They mean the idols, because they worshipped the idols. Allah says: 'They have no knowledge of that'—meaning regarding the idols—'they are only conjecturing.'" He said: "[They] know the power of Allah over that." (2)

His saying, the Almighty: "And he made it a word remaining among his descendants."

18500 - From Ikrimah regarding: "And he made it a word remaining among his descendants," he said: "In Islam, he bequeathed it to his children." (3)

His saying, the Almighty: "And they said, 'Why was this Quran not sent down upon a great man from the two cities?'"

18501 - From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, that he was asked about the saying of Allah: "And they said, 'Why was this Quran not sent down upon a great man from the two cities?'" He said: "He means by the two cities Mecca and al-Ta'if, and the 'great man' is al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah al-Qurashi and Habib ibn 'Umayr al-Thaqafi." (4)

18502 - From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, regarding His saying: "And they said, 'Why was this Quran not sent down upon a great man from the two cities?'" He said: "They mean someone more noble than Muhammad: al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah from the people of Mecca, and Mas'ud ibn 'Amr al-Thaqafi from the people of al-Ta'if." (5)

18503 - From Qatadah, he said: "Al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah said: 'If what Muhammad says were true, this Quran would have been sent down upon me, or upon 'Urwah ibn Mas'ud al-Thaqafi.' So it was revealed: 'And they said, Why was this Quran not sent down upon a great man from the two cities?'" (6)

His saying, the Almighty: "And were it not that the people would become one community."

18504 - From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both: "'And were it not that the people would become one community'—the verse—he says: 'Were it not that I would make all the people disbelievers, I would have made for the houses of the disbelievers roofs of silver and stairways upon which they appear'—they climb to the rooms—'and couches of silver and ornamentation,' and it is gold." (7)
