Translation · EN

18571 - My father narrated to us, Sulayman ibn Ma'bad narrated to us, Amr ibn Asim al-Kila'i narrated to us, Abu Awana narrated to us, from Abu Bishr Ja'far ibn Abi Wahshiyya, from Yusuf ibn Sa'd, from Muhammad ibn Hatib, who said: "He stayed in my house when Ali prevailed over the people of Basra. One day, he said to me: 'I was present with the Commander of the Faithful, Ali, and with him were Ammar, Sa'sa'ah, al-Ashtar, and Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr. They mentioned Uthman and spoke against him, while Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was on the couch with a stick in his hand. One of them said: "Indeed, you have among you one who can judge between you." So they asked him, and Ali said: "Uthman was among those of whom Allah said: 'They are those from whom We will accept the best of what they did and overlook their misdeeds, among the companions of Paradise, the promise of truth which they had been promised.'" He said: "By Allah, Uthman and the companions of Uthman"—he said it three times. Yusuf said: "I then said to Muhammad ibn Hatib: 'By Allah, did you hear this from Ali?' He said: 'By Allah, I heard this from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).'" (1)

18572 - Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Muhammad ibn al-Ala' narrated to us, Yahya ibn Abi Za'ida narrated to us, from Isma'il ibn Abi Khalid, Abd Allah ibn al-Mini reported to me, saying: "I was in the mosque when Marwan was delivering a sermon. He said: 'Indeed, Allah has shown the Commander of the Faithful a good opinion regarding Yazid, that he should appoint him as his successor, just as Abu Bakr and Umar appointed successors.' Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr then said: 'Is this Heraclian? By Allah, Abu Bakr did not place it in any of his children or any member of his household, and Mu'awiya only placed it in his son out of mercy and honor for his son.' Marwan replied: 'Are you not the one who said to his parents: "Fie on both of you!"?' Abd al-Rahman replied: 'Are you not the son of the cursed one whom the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) cursed, meaning your father?' He said: 'A'isha heard them both and said: "O Marwan, are you the one who said such and such to Abd al-Rahman? You lied! It was not revealed concerning him, but rather it was revealed concerning so-and-so, son of so-and-so." Then Marwan sobbed, descended from the pulpit, went to the door of her chamber, and began speaking to her until he left.'" (2)

His saying, the Almighty: "And he who said to his parents: 'Fie on you both!'"

18573 - From al-Suddi who said: "This verse, 'And he who said to his parents: "Fie on you both!"', was revealed regarding Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr. He said it to his parents, as they had both embraced Islam, but he had refused to embrace it. They would command him to accept Islam, and he would reject them and call them liars, saying: 'Where is so-and-so? And where is so-and-so?'—meaning the elders of Quraysh who had died. He later embraced Islam, and his conversion was sincere, so his repentance was revealed in this verse: '...And for all there are degrees from what they did.'"
