His saying, the Almighty: "Possessors of great might."
18594 - From Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding His saying: "Possessors of great might," he says: "Persia."(1)
18595 - From Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "Possessors of great might," he said: "They are the Bariz," meaning the Kurds.(2)
His saying, the Almighty: "Allah was certainly pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you."
18596 - From Salamah ibn al-Akwa (may Allah be pleased with him) he said: "While we were resting at midday, the caller of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) called out: 'O people! The pledge, the pledge! The Spirit of Holiness has descended.' We went to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) while he was under a Samurah tree and we pledged allegiance to him. That is His saying: 'Allah was certainly pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you under the tree.' He pledged allegiance for Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) by striking one of his hands against the other. The people said: 'Congratulations to Ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him); he is circumambulating the House while we are here.' The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: 'Even if he stayed such and such years, he would not circumambulate it until I do.'"(3)
His saying, the Almighty: "And it is He who withheld their hands from you."
18597 - From Ibn Uzay he said: "When the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) went out with the sacrificial animals and reached Dhu al-Hulayfah, Umar said to him: 'O Prophet of Allah, are you entering upon a people with whom you are at war without weapons or mounts?' So he sent to Medina and did not leave a single weapon or mount but that he carried it. When he drew near to Mecca, they prevented him from entering. He traveled until he arrived at Mina and camped there. Then Uyaynah ibn Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl came to him; he had gone out against him with five hundred men. He said to Khalid ibn al-Walid: 'O Khalid, this is your cousin who has come to you with the cavalry.' Khalid said: 'I am the Sword of Allah and the sword of His Messenger'—it was on that day he was named the Sword of Allah—'O Messenger of Allah, cast me wherever you wish.' So he sent him with cavalry, and Ikrimah met him in the mountain pass and he defeated him."
