Surah Al-Hujurat

49

His saying, the Almighty: "O you who have believed, do not put [yourselves] before Allah and His Messenger but fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing."

18604 - From Ibn Abbas regarding His saying: "Do not put [yourselves] before Allah and His Messenger," he said: "Do not say anything contrary to the Book and the Sunnah."(1)

18605 - From Qatadah, he said: It was mentioned to us that people used to say: "If only such and such were revealed regarding this and that." So Allah disliked that and spoke before them concerning it.(2)

18606 - From Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding His saying: "Do not put [yourselves] before Allah and His Messenger," he said: "They were forbidden to speak before His speech."(3)

His saying, the Almighty: "Indeed, those who call you from behind the chambers – most of them do not use reason. And if they had been patient until you [could] come out to them, it would have been better for them. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."

18607 - My father told us, Amr ibn Ali al-Bahili told us, al-Mu'tamir ibn Sulayman told us: I heard Dawud al-Tufawi narrating from Abu Muslim al-Bajali, from Zayd ibn Arqam, he said: A group of Arabs gathered and said: "Let us go to this man. If he is a Prophet, we are the happiest of people because of him; and if he is a king, we shall live under his shadow." He said: So I came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and informed him of what they had said. Then they came to his chamber and began calling out to him while he was in his room: "O Muhammad! O Muhammad!" So Allah revealed: "Indeed, those who call you from behind the chambers – most of them do not use reason." He said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) began to say: "Allah has confirmed your statement, O Zayd. Allah has confirmed your statement, O Zayd."(4)
