Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 10 · Page 181[Surah al-Qamar (54): Verse 20]

Translation · EN

Sa'id, from Qatadah, who said: Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, cast the Ark onto the land of al-Jazirah as a lesson and a sign, until the early generations of this nation looked at it. And how many a ship existed after it and became ashes.(1)

His saying, the Almighty: "Like the trunks of palm trees uprooted."

18710 - From Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Like the trunks of palm trees uprooted," he said: The black trunks of palm trees.(2)

His saying, the Almighty: "So he grasped (for help)."

18711 - From Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "So he grasped (for help)," he said: He took hold.(3)

His saying, the Almighty: "Like the dry stubble of a pen-builder."

18712 - From Ibn 'Abbas regarding "Like the dry stubble of a pen-builder," he said: It is the fodder which he enclosed, then ate it dry and it vanished.(4)

His saying, the Almighty: "The multitude will be put to flight, and they will turn their backs."

18713 - From 'Ikrimah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: When "The multitude will be put to flight" was revealed, until the day of Badr, I saw the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—jumping into his armor and saying: "The multitude will be put to flight, and they will turn their backs," so I knew its interpretation on that day.(5)

His saying, the Almighty: "Taste the touch of Saqar (Hell)."

18714 - My father narrated to us, Sahl ibn Salih al-Antaki narrated to us, Qurrah ibn Habib narrated to me, from Kinanah, Jarir ibn Hazim narrated to us, from Sa'id ibn 'Amr ibn Ja'dah, from Ibn Zurarah, from his father, from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—that he recited this verse: "Taste the touch of Saqar. Verily, all things have We created in proportion," and he said: It was revealed concerning people of my nation who will be at the end of time, who deny the decree (qadar) of Allah.(6)

18715 - al-Hasan ibn 'Arafah narrated to us, Marwan ibn Shuja' al-Jazari narrated to us, from 'Abd al-Malik ibn Jurayj, from 'Ata' ibn Abi Rabah, who said: I came to Ibn 'Abbas while he was drawing water from Zamzam, and the lower parts of his garments were wet. I said to him: The matter of the decree (qadar) has been discussed. He said: Have they really done it? I said: Yes. He said: By Allah, this verse was not revealed except concerning them: "Taste the touch of Saqar. Verily, all things have We created in proportion." Those are the worst of this nation; do not visit their sick, and do not pray over their dead. If I were to see one of them, I would gouge out his eyes with these two fingers of mine.(7)
