of Allah, he said: So he handed him his hand. He said: "I have loaned my garden to my Lord"—and he had a garden containing six hundred date palms, and Umm al-Dahdah and her dependents were in it. He said: So Abu al-Dahdah came and called out to her: "O Umm al-Dahdah!" She replied: "At your service." He said: "Go out, for I have loaned it to my Lord, the Almighty and Majestic." In one narration, she said to him: "Your trade has profited, O Abu al-Dahdah," and she moved her belongings and children out of it. And the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "How many lush date-palm clusters are in Paradise for Abu al-Dahdah!" and in another wording: "Many a heavy-laden date palm, its roots made of pearls and rubies, is for Abu al-Dahdah in Paradise." (1)
His saying, the Almighty: "...and many of them are defiantly disobedient."
18829 - My father narrated to us, Hisham ibn 'Ammar narrated to us, Shihab ibn Khirash narrated to us, Hajjaj ibn Dinar narrated to us, from Mansur ibn al-Mu'tamir, from al-Rabi' ibn 'Umaylah al-Fazari, he said: 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud narrated to us, and I have never heard anything more amazing to me than it, except something from the Book of Allah or something said by the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He said: "When time grew long for the Children of Israel and their hearts hardened, they invented a book of their own making. Their hearts were seduced by it, their tongues found it sweet, and they took pleasure in it. The truth would often stand between them and many of their desires, so they said: 'Come, let us call the Children of Israel to this book of ours; whoever follows us on it, we will leave him, and whoever refuses to follow us, we will kill him.' So they did that. There was a jurist among them, and when he saw what they were doing, he resorted to what he knew of the Book of Allah, wrote it down on something delicate, rolled it up, and placed it inside a horn, which he then hung around his neck. When they increased the killing, some of them said to others: 'O you people, you have spread slaughter among the Children of Israel, so call so-and-so and present your book to him; if he follows you, the rest of the people will follow you, and if he refuses, kill him.' So they called that jurist and said: 'Do you believe in what is in our book?' He said: 'And what is in it? Present it to me.' So they presented it to him until the end, then they said: 'Do you believe in this?' He said: 'Yes, I believe in what is in this,' and he pointed with his hand to the horn. So they left him alone. When he died, they exhumed him and found that horn hanging, and they found inside it what was known from the Book of Allah. Some of them said to others: 'O you people, we never used to hear this; he must have been afflicted with a trial.' Thus, the Children of Israel split into seventy-two sects, and the best of their sects is the sect of the companions of the owner of the horn." (2)
