His saying, the Almighty: "Have you not seen those who were forbidden from private conversation?"
18842 - From Muqatil b. Hayyan, who said: There was a truce between the Jews and the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. When a man from the companions of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, passed by them, they would sit and whisper among themselves until the believer thought they were whispering about killing him or something the believer disliked. When the believer saw that, he would fear them and avoid passing by them. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, forbade them from private conversation, but they did not desist. So Allah revealed: "Have you not seen those who were forbidden from private conversation..." until the end of the verse. (1)
His saying, the Almighty: "They greet you"
18843 - From Aishah, who said: Some Jews entered upon the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said: "Al-sam (death) be upon you, O Abu al-Qasim." Aishah said: "And upon you be death and the curse." He said: "O Aishah, indeed Allah does not love indecency or the pursuit of indecency." I said: "Do you not hear them saying 'Death be upon you'?" The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "Did you not hear what I said? 'And upon you.'" So Allah revealed: "And when they come to you, they greet you with a greeting that Allah does not greet you with." (2)
18844 - From Ibn Abbas, regarding this verse, who said: The hypocrites used to say to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, when they greeted him: "Death be upon you," so this was revealed. (3)
His saying, the Almighty: "Make space"
18845 - From Qatadah, regarding His saying: "When it is said to you, 'Make space'..." the verse: He said: This verse was revealed concerning the gatherings of dhikr (remembrance). It is that when they saw one of them approaching, they were stingy with their seats near the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, so Allah commanded them to make space for one another. 18846 - From Muqatil b. Hayyan, who said: This verse was revealed on a Friday, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was sitting that day in the Suffah, and the place was narrow. He used to honor the people of Badr

قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ نُهُوا عَنِ النَّجْوَى
١٨٨٤٢ - عَنْ مُقَاتِلِ بْنِ حَيَّانَ قَالَ: كَانَ بَيْنَ يَهُودَ وَبَيْنَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُوَادَعَةٌ فَكَانُوا إِذَا مَرَّ بِهِمْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَلَسُوا يَتَنَاجَوْنَ بَيْنَهُمْ، حَتَّى يَظُنَّ الْمُؤْمِنُ أَنَّهُمْ يَتَنَاجَوْنَ بِقَتْلِهِ أَوْ بِمَا يَكْرَهُ الْمُؤْمِنُ، فَإِذَا رَأَى الْمُؤْمِنُ ذَلِكَ خَشِيَهُمْ فَتَرَكَ طَرِيقَهُ عَلَيْهِمْ فَنَهَاهُمُ النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ النَّجْوَى فَلَمْ يَنْتَهُوا، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ نُهُوا عَنِ النَّجْوَى الْآيَةَ «١» .
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: حَيَّوْكَ
١٨٨٤٣ - عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ: دَخَّلَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَهُودُ فَقَالُوا: السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ، فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ: وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّامُ وَاللَّعْنَةُ، فَقَالَ:
يَا عَائِشَةُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْفُحْشَ وَلا التَّفَحُّشَ. قُلْتُ أَلا تَسْمَعُهُمْ يَقُولُونَ السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ؟
فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: أَوَمَا سَمِعْتِ مَا أَقُولُ وَعَلَيْكُمْ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ وإذا جاؤك حَيَّوْكَ بِمَا لَمْ يُحَيِّكَ بِهِ اللَّهُ «٢» .
١٨٨٤٤ - عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فِي هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ قَالَ: كَانَ الْمُنَافِقُونَ يَقُولُونَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا حَيَّوْهُ: سَامٌ عَلَيْكَ فَنَزَلَتْ «٣» .
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: تَفَسَّحُوا
١٨٨٤٥ - عَنْ قَتَادَةَ فِي قَوْلِهِ: إِذَا قِيلَ لَكُمْ تَفَسَّحُوا الْآيَةَ قَالَ: نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ فِي مَجَالِسِ الذكر، وذلك أنهم كانوا إِذَا رَأَوْا أَحَدَهُمْ مُقْبِلًا ضَنُّوا بِمَجَالِسِهِمْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَمَرَهُمُ اللَّهُ أَنْ يَفْسَحَ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ «٤» .
١٨٨٤٦ - عَنْ مُقَاتِلِ بْنِ حَيَّانَ قَالَ: أُنْزِلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ يَوْمَ جُمُعَةٍ وَجَلَسَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَئِذٍ فِي الصُّفَّةِ وَفِي الْمَكَانِ ضِيقٌ، وكان يكرم أهل بدر
