- Muhammad ibn Ishaq said, from Yazid ibn Abi Habib, from Marthad ibn 'Abdullah al-Yazani, from Abu 'Abdullah 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Usayla al-Sanabih, from 'Ubada ibn al-Samit, who said: I was among those who attended the First 'Aqaba, and we were twelve men. We gave the oath of allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) upon the oath of the women—and that was before war was made obligatory—on the condition that we would not associate anything with Allah, nor steal, nor commit adultery, nor kill our children, nor bring forth a slander that we fabricate between our hands and our feet, nor disobey him in any good deed. He said: "If you fulfill [this], then you shall have Paradise." (1)
His saying, the Almighty: "And that they will not kill their children"
- From Muqatil ibn Hayyan: This verse was revealed on the day of the Conquest [of Mecca], and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) gave the oath of allegiance to the men at al-Safa, and 'Umar gave the oath of allegiance to the women below it on behalf of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). He mentioned the rest of it as previously stated and added: When he said, "And that they will not kill their children," Hind said, "We raised them when they were small, then you killed them when they were grown," so 'Umar ibn al-Khattab laughed until he fell backward. (2)
- My father narrated to us, [saying] Nasr ibn 'Ali narrated to us, [saying] Ghabta bint Sulayman narrated to me, [saying] my paternal aunt narrated to me, from her grandmother, from 'A'isha, who said: Hind bint 'Utba came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) to pledge allegiance to him. He looked at her hand and said: "Go and change your hand." She went and changed it with henna, then she returned, and he said: "I accept your allegiance on the condition that you do not associate anything with Allah." He accepted her allegiance, and she had two bracelets of gold on her hands. She said: "What do you say about these two bracelets?" He replied: "Two coals from the coals of Hellfire." (3)
- Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, [saying] Ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from Husayn, from 'Amir—meaning al-Sha'bi—who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) took the oath of allegiance from the women, and he had placed his hand upon his own palm. Then he said: "And do not kill your children." A woman said: "You kill their fathers, and you advise us regarding their children?" He said: After that, whenever women came to pledge allegiance to him, he would gather them and present [the conditions] to them, and when they acknowledged them, they would leave. (4)
