Surat al-Munafiqun (The Hypocrites)

63

His saying, the Almighty: "As if they were timbers propped up."

18899 - From Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "As if they were timbers propped up," he said: "Upright palm trunks." (1)

His saying, the Almighty: "And when it is said to them, 'Come, the Messenger of Allah will ask forgiveness for you.'"

18900 - From Sa'id ibn Jubayr that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) used to, when he stopped at a place during a journey, not depart from it until he had prayed there. When it was the expedition of Tabuk, he stopped at a place, and 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy said: "If we return to Medina, the more honorable will surely drive out the more abased." This reached the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), so he departed without praying. They mentioned that to him, so he mentioned the story of Ibn Ubayy, and the Quran was revealed: "When the hypocrites come to you, they say, 'We bear witness that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah,' and Allah knows that you are indeed His Messenger."

'Abdullah ibn Ubayy came to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and began to make excuses and swear that he did not say it, while the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was saying to him: "Repent." He began to turn his head away, so Allah the Almighty revealed: "And when it is said to them, 'Come, the Messenger of Allah will ask forgiveness for you,' they turn their heads away"—the verse. (2)

His saying, the Almighty: "O you who have believed, let not your wealth and your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah"—the verse.

18901 - From Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Whoever has wealth that would enable him to perform the Hajj to the House of his Lord, or upon which Zakat is due from him, and he does not do so, he will ask to be sent back at the time of death." A man said to him: "O Ibn 'Abbas, fear Allah! Only the disbelievers ask to be sent back." He said: "I will recite to you a Quranic verse regarding that: 'O you who have believed, let not your wealth and your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah'"—to the end of the Surah. (3)
