Sūrat al-Maʿārij (The Ascending Stairways)

70

His saying, the Almighty: "A questioner asked concerning a punishment about to fall."

18983 - From Ibn ʿAbbās regarding His saying: "A questioner asked," he said: "It is al-Naḍr ibn al-Ḥārith. He said: 'O God, if this is the truth from You, then rain down upon us stones from the sky.'" And regarding His saying: "concerning a punishment about to fall," he said: "It will occur to the disbelievers and nothing can avert it." "From God, Lord of the Ascending Stairways," he said: "The possessor of the degrees."

18984 - From al-Suddī regarding His saying: "A questioner asked," he said: "It was revealed in Mecca concerning al-Naḍr ibn al-Ḥārith, when he said: 'O God, if this is the truth from You' [the verse]. His punishment occurred on the day of Badr."

His saying, the Almighty: "Lord of the Ascending Stairways."

18985 - From Ibn ʿAbbās regarding His saying: "Lord of the Ascending Stairways," he said: "The possessor of loftiness and bounties."

His saying, the Almighty: "In a day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years."

18987 - From Ibn ʿAbbās (may God be pleased with them both) regarding His saying: "In a day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years," he said: "The extent of its matter from the lowest of the earths to the extent of its matter from above the seven heavens is a measure of fifty thousand years. And a day the measure whereof is a thousand years refers to the descent of the command from the heaven to the earth and from the earth to the heaven in a single day, and that is a measure of a thousand years, because what is between the heaven and the earth is a journey of five hundred years."

18988 - From Ibn ʿAbbās (may God be pleased with them both), he said: "The thickness of every earth is five hundred years; that makes fourteen thousand years. And between the seventh heaven and the Throne is a journey of thirty-six thousand years. That is His saying: 'In a day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years.'"
