the keepers of Hell. He said: "God and His Messenger know best." He then came and informed the Prophet (may God bless him and grant him peace), and at that moment "Over it are nineteen" was revealed upon him.
19040 - From al-Suddī, he said: When "Over it are nineteen" was revealed, a man from Quraysh called Abū al-Ashaddayn said: "O people of Quraysh, let the nineteen not alarm you; I will defend you against them with my right shoulder [taking] ten, and with my left shoulder [taking] the [remaining] nine." Then God revealed: "And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except as angels."
19041 - Abū Zurʿah narrated to us, Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā narrated to us, Ibn Abī Zāʾidah narrated to us, Ḥārith informed me, from ʿĀmir, from al-Barāʾ regarding His saying: "Over it are nineteen," he said: A group of Jews asked a man from the companions of the Messenger of God (may God bless him and grant him peace) about the keepers of Hell. He said: "God and His Messenger know best." A man came and informed the Prophet (may God bless him and grant him peace), and at that moment "Over it are nineteen" was revealed upon him. He informed his companions and said: "Call them; indeed, I will ask them about the soil of Paradise if they come to me—it is white darmak (fine flour)." They came to him and asked him about the keepers of Hell, and he gestured with the fingers of his hands twice, holding back the thumb in the second [gesture]. Then he said: "Inform me about the soil of Paradise." They said: "Inform them, O Ibn Salām." He said: "It is like a white loaf [of bread]." The Messenger of God (may God bless him and grant him peace) said: "Indeed, bread is only made from darmak."
His (Exalted is He) saying: "when it departs"
19042 - From Ibn ʿAbbās, "and the night when it departs (idha adbara)," he said: Its departure is its darkness.
19043 - From Mujāhid, he said: I asked Ibn ʿAbbās about His saying: "and the night when it departs," and he was silent toward me until it was the last part of the night and he heard the first adhān (call to prayer), then he called to me: "O Mujāhid, this is the time when the night has departed."
His (Exalted is He) saying: "except those of the right"
19044 - From Mujāhid regarding His saying: "Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained, except those of the right," he said: They will not be held to account.
