al-Dashtakī, narrated to us my father from his father from Ashʿath, from Jaʿfar, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās regarding His statement: "O soul at peace, return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him]," he said: It was revealed while Abū Bakr was sitting, and he said: O Messenger of Allāh, how beautiful this is! So it was said: It will indeed be said to you this.

19288 - Abū Saʿīd al-Ashajj narrated to us, Ibn Yamān narrated to us from Ashʿath, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, he said: I recited in the presence of the Prophet, may Allāh bless him and grant him peace: "O soul at peace, return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him]," and Abū Bakr, may Allāh be pleased with him, said: Verily, this is beautiful. The Prophet, may Allāh bless him and grant him peace, said to him: "Indeed, the angel will say this to you at the time of death."

19289 - On the authority of al-Ḍaḥḥāk, from Ibn ʿAbbās, may Allāh be pleased with them both, that the Prophet, may Allāh bless him and grant him peace, said: "Who will purchase the well of Rūmah for us to have sweet water from it, and Allāh will forgive him?" So ʿUthmān purchased it. The Prophet, may Allāh bless him and grant him peace, said: "Will you make it a source of water for the people?" He said: "Yes." So Allāh revealed concerning ʿUthmān: "O soul at peace," [to the end of the] verse.

19290 - On the authority of Buraydah, may Allāh be pleased with him, regarding His statement: "O soul at peace," he said: It means the soul of Ḥamzah.

19291 - On the authority of Mujāhid, may Allāh be pleased with him, regarding His statement: "O soul at peace," he said: The one who is certain that Allāh is her Lord.

19292 - On the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, may Allāh be pleased with him, he said: A valley flows from the foundation of the Throne, and in it grows every creature on the face of the earth. Then the souls will fly, and they will be ordered to enter the bodies, and that is His statement: "Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him]."

19293 - On the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, may Allāh be pleased with them both, regarding His statement: "Return to your Lord, well-pleased," he said: With what she has been given of reward, "pleasing" with her deeds. "So enter among My servants, who are believers."

19294 - On the authority of al-Ḥasan, may Allāh be pleased with him, regarding His statement: "O soul at peace" [to the end of the] verse, he said: Verily, when Allāh desires to seize His believing servant, the soul is at peace with Him, and He is at peace with her, and she is pleased with Allāh, and Allāh is pleased with her. He commands that it be seized, so He enters her into Paradise and makes her among His righteous servants.
