yours." The Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) went to the man, the owner of the house, and said to him: "The palm tree is for you and your family." ʿIkrimah said: Ibn ʿAbbās said: So Allāh, the Almighty, the Majestic, revealed: "By the night when it covers [everything]," until His saying: "As for he who gives and fears Allāh, and believes in the best [reward], We will ease him toward ease. But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need, and denies the best [reward], We will ease him toward difficulty," to the end of the Sūrah.
19356 - On the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr regarding [the verse] "By the night when it covers [everything]," he said: When it approaches and covers everything.
His saying, the Almighty: "And [by] He who created the male and female."
19357 - On the authority of al-Ḥasan, that he used to recite it "And [by] He who created the male and female," meaning: And [by] the One who created the male and female.
His saying, the Almighty: "Indeed, your efforts [are] diverse."
19358 - On the authority of ʿIkrimah regarding His saying: "Indeed, your efforts [are] diverse," he said: The effort is the deed.
19359 - On the authority of Ibn Masʿūd, that Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq bought Bilāl from Umayyah ibn Khalaf for a garment and ten ounces [of silver], and he freed him for the sake of Allāh. So Allāh revealed: "By the night when it covers [everything]," until His saying: "Indeed, your efforts [are] diverse"—the efforts of Abū Bakr and Umayyah and Ubayy—until His saying: "And denies the best [reward]." He said: [It means] There is no god but Allāh. Until His saying: "We will ease him toward difficulty." He said: [It refers to] The Fire.
19360 - ʿIkrimah said, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: Meaning, he withheld his wealth and considered himself free of need from his Lord, the Almighty, the Majestic.
His saying, the Almighty: "As for he who gives..." until His saying: "We will ease him toward ease."
19361 - On the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās regarding His saying: "As for he who gives [from the bounty] and fears Allāh," he said: He feared his Lord. "And believes in the best [reward]," he said: He believed in the compensation from Allāh. "We will ease him toward ease," he said: The good from Allāh. "But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need," he said: He withheld his wealth and considered himself free of need from his Lord. "And denies the best [reward]," he said: The compensation from Allāh. "We will ease him toward difficulty," he said: For the evil from Allāh.
19362 - On the authority of Qatādah regarding "As for he who gives," he said: He gave the right of Allāh that is upon him, and feared His prohibitions, and believed in the best [reward], he said: In what Allāh has promised for Himself.

لك فذهب رسولا لله صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى الرَّجُلِ صَاحِبِ الدَّارِ فَقَالَ لَهُ:
«النَّخْلَةُ لَكَ وَلِعِيَالِكَ» قَالَ عِكْرَمَةُ: قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَى إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَى وَاتَّقَى وَصَدَّقَ بِالْحُسْنَى، فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْيُسْرَى. وَأَمَّا مَنْ بَخِلَ وَاسْتَغْنَى وَكَذَّبَ بِالْحُسْنَى فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْعُسْرَى إِلَى آخِرِ السُّورَةِ «١» .
١٩٣٥٦ - عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَى قَالَ: إِذَا أَقْبَلَ فَغَطَّى كُلَّ شَيْءٍ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: وَمَا خَلَقَ الذَّكَرَ وَالْأُنْثَى
١٩٣٥٧ - عَنِ الْحَسَنِ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقْرَؤُهَا وَمَا خَلَقَ الذَّكَرَ وَالْأُنْثَى يَقُولُ: وَالَّذِي خَلَقَ الذَّكَرَ وَالْأُنْثَى «٢» .
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: إِنَّ سَعْيَكُمْ
١٩٣٥٨ - عَنْ عِكْرَمَةَ فِي قَوْلِهِ: إِنَّ سَعْيَكُمْ قَالَ: السَّعْيُ: الْعَمَلُ «٣» .
١٩٣٥٩ - عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرِ الصِّدِّيقَ اشْتَرَى بِلالًا مِنْ أُمَيَّةَ بْنِ خَلَفٍ، بِبُرْدَةٍ وَعَشْرِ أَوَاقٍ فَأَعْتَقَهُ للَّهِ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ: وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَى إِلَى قَوْلِهِ إِنَّ سَعْيَكُمْ لَشَتَّى سَعْيُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَأُمَيَّةَ وَأُبَيِّ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: وَكَذَّبَ بِالْحُسْنَى قَالَ: لَا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْعُسْرَى قَالَ: النَّارُ «٤» .
١٩٣٦٠ - قَالَ عِكْرَمَةُ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَيْ بَخِلَ بِمَالِهِ وَاسْتَغْنَى عَنْ رَبِّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَى إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لليسرى «٥»
١٩٣٦١ - عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ: فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَى مِنَ الْفَضْلِ وَاتَّقَى قَالَ:
اتَّقَى رَبَّهُ وَصَدَّقَ بِالْحُسْنَى قَالَ: صَدَّقَ بِالْخَلَفِ مِنَ اللَّهِ: فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْيُسْرَى قَالَ: الْخَيْرُ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَأَمَّا مَنْ بَخِلَ وَاسْتَغْنَى قَالَ: بَخِلَ بِمَالِهِ وَاسْتَغْنَى عَنْ رَبِّهِ وَكَذَّبَ بِالْحُسْنَى قَالَ: الْخَلَفُ مِنَ اللَّهِ فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْعُسْرَى قَالَ: لِلشَّرِّ مِنَ اللَّهِ «٦» .
١٩٣٦٢ - عَنْ قَتَادَةَ فَأَمَّا من أعطى قَالَ: أَعْطَى حَقَّ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَاتَّقَى مَحَارِمَهُ وَصَدَّقَ بِالْحُسْنَى قَالَ: بِمَوْعُودِ اللَّهِ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ
