Sūrat al-Ḍuḥā (The Morning Brightness)
93
His saying, the Almighty: "By the morning brightness, and [by] the night when it covers [with darkness]."
19369 - Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us, [saying]: Sufyān narrated to us, from al-Aswad ibn Qays, he said: I heard Jundab saying: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) fell ill, so he did not stand [for night prayer] for a night or two. Then a woman came and said: "O Muḥammad, I do not see your devil except that he has abandoned you." Then Allāh the Almighty revealed: "By the morning brightness, and [by] the night when it covers [with darkness]. Your Lord has not taken leave of you, [O Muḥammad], nor has He detested [you]."
19370 - Abū Saʿīd al-Ashajj and ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Awdī narrated to us, [both] saying: Abū Usāmah narrated to us, [saying]: Sufyān narrated to me, [saying]: al-Aswad ibn Qays narrated to me, that he heard Jundab saying: The Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) had his finger struck by a stone, so he said: "Are you but a finger that has bled, and [it is] in the path of Allāh that I have met [this]?" He said: So he remained for two or three nights not standing [in prayer], and a woman said to him: "I do not see your devil except that he has abandoned you." Then it was revealed: "By the morning brightness, and [by] the night when it covers [with darkness]. Your Lord has not taken leave of you, [O Muḥammad], nor has He detested [you]." The wording is that of Abū Saʿīd.
19371 - On the authority of Mujāhid (may Allāh be pleased with him) regarding "and [by] the night when it covers [with darkness]" (idhā sajā), he said: When it becomes still.
19372 - On the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr (may Allāh be pleased with him) regarding "and [by] the night when it covers [with darkness]" (idhā sajā), he said: When it arrives and covers everything.
His saying, the Almighty: "Your Lord has not taken leave of you."
19373 - On the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allāh be pleased with them both) regarding "when it covers" (idhā sajā), he said: When it departs. Regarding "Your Lord has not taken leave of you" (mā waddaʿaka rabbuka), he said: He has not abandoned you. And regarding "nor has He detested [you]" (wa mā qalā), he said: He has not hated you.
