Sūrat al-Sharḥ (The Expansion)

94

His saying, the Almighty: "Have We not expanded for you your breast?"

19387 - Abū Zurʿah narrated to us, [saying] Abū ʿUmar al-Ḥawḍī narrated to us, [saying] Ḥammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, [saying] ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib narrated to us, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "I asked my Lord for a request that I wished I had not asked Him. I said: There were prophets before me, among them were those for whom the wind was subjected, and among them were those who could revive the dead. He said: O Muḥammad, did I not find you an orphan and give you shelter? I said: Yes, O Lord. He said: Did I not find you lost and guide you? I said: Yes, O Lord. He said: Did I not find you poor and enrich you? I said: Yes, O Lord. He said: Did I not expand your breast for you? Did I not raise your mention for you? I said: Yes, O Lord."

His saying, the Almighty: "And We removed from you your burden, which weighed down your back."

19388 - On the authority of Mujāhid regarding "And We removed from you your burden," he said: Your sin. Regarding "which weighed down your back," he said: It made [it] heavy.

19389 - On the authority of Shurayḥ ibn ʿUbayd al-Ḥaḍramī regarding "And We removed from you your burden," he said: And We forgave you your sin.

19390 - On the authority of Mujāhid, he said: In the recitation of ʿAbd Allāh [it is written]: "And We have relieved you of your load."

His saying, the Almighty: "And raised high for you your mention."

19391 - On the authority of Mujāhid regarding His saying: "And raised high for you your mention," he said: I am not mentioned except that you are mentioned with Me: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah.

19392 - On the authority of Qatādah regarding "And raised high for you your mention," he said: Allah raised his mention in this world and the Hereafter. There is no speaker, nor one testifying [to the faith], nor one performing prayer, except that he proclaims: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah.

19393 - On the authority of Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), he said: "Jibrīl came to me and said: Verily, your Lord says: Do you know how I raised your mention? I said: Allah knows best. He said: Whenever I am mentioned, you are mentioned with Me."
