Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 10 · Page 308His saying (the Exalted): 'We have certainly created man in the best of stature. Then We return him to the lowest of the low'

Translation · EN

19405 - On the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās regarding "By the fig and the olive," he said: It is the fruit that people eat. "And [by] Mount Sīnīn," he said: The Mount (al-Ṭūr) is the mountain, and Sīnīn is the blessed [one].

19406 - On the authority of Mujāhid regarding "By the fig and the olive," he said: The fruit that people eat. "And [by] Mount Sīnīn," he said: The Mount is the mountain, and Sīnīn is the blessed [one]. "And this secure city," he said: It is Makkah. "We have certainly created man in the best of stature," he said: In the best of forms. "Then We return him to the lowest of the low," he said: In the Fire. "Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds," he said: Except for those who believe, for them is a reward that is not interrupted (ghayr mamnūn), he said: Not calculated.

19407 - On the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: Sīnīn means "the beautiful" in the Abyssinian language.

19408 - On the authority of ʿIkrimah regarding His saying: "And [by] Mount Sīnīn," he said: It means "the beautiful."

His saying, the Almighty: "We have certainly created man in the best of stature. Then We return him to the lowest of the low."

19409 - On the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās regarding "We have certainly created man in the best of stature," he said: In the most balanced creation. "Then We return him to the lowest of the low," he says: To the most decrepit [stage of] life. "Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds, for them is a reward that is not interrupted," [meaning] not diminished. He says: So when the believer reaches the most decrepit [stage of] life, and he used to perform righteous deeds in his youth, Allah writes for him the reward of what he used to do in his health and youth, and what he does in his old age does not harm him, and the errors he commits after reaching the most decrepit [stage of] life are not written against him.

19410 - On the authority of ʿIkrimah regarding "Then We return him to the lowest of the low," he said: It is extreme old age; He did not leave any strength in him so that he would not know anything after having known. He said: No one who recites the Qur’an descends to that level, and that is His saying: "Except for those who believe..." to the end of the verse. He said: They are the people of the Qur’an.
