[His saying: Those who show off]

19500- From ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib regarding His saying: "Those who show off," he said: They show off with their prayer. (1)

19501- From Ibn Masʿūd, he said: During the time of the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ), we used to consider "al-māʿūn" to be the lending of the bucket, the pot, the axe, the scale, and what you exchange among yourselves. (2)

His saying: "And withhold al-māʿūn."

19502- Abū Saʿīd al-Ashaj narrated to us, Wakīʿ narrated to us, from Ibn Abī Dhu'ayb, from al-Zuhrī regarding "And withhold al-māʿūn," he said: In the tongue of Quraysh, it is wealth. (3)

19503- My father and Abū Zurʿah narrated to us, they said: Qays b. Ḥafṣ al-Rāʿī narrated to us, Dalham b. Dahtham al-ʿIjlī narrated to us, Māʾidh b. Rabīʿah al-Numayrī narrated to us that they came as a delegation to the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) and said: O Messenger of Allāh, what do you instruct us with? He said: "Do not withhold," and he said: O Messenger of Allāh, what is al-māʿūn? He said: "It is the stone, the iron, and the water."

They said: Which iron? He said: "Your copper pots and the iron of the axe that you use." They said: And what is the stone? He said: "Your stone pots." (4)

19504- From Zayd b. Aslam regarding His saying: "And withhold al-māʿūn," he said: They are those hypocrites; prayer was apparent, so they performed it, but Zakat was hidden, so they withheld it. (5)

19505- From ʿIkrimah, he said: The peak of al-māʿūn is the Zakat of wealth, and its lowest is the sieve, the bucket, and the needle.

19506- From Muḥammad b. Kaʿb, he said: Al-māʿūn is kindness. (6)
