[Sūrat al-Kawthar]

108

[His saying: Al-Kawthar]

19507- ʿAlī b. Ḥafṣ narrated to us, Warqāʾ narrated to us, he said: ʿAṭāʾ b. Muḥārib b. Dithār narrated from Ibn ʿUmar, he said: The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said: "Al-Kawthar is a river in Paradise, its banks are of gold, and the water runs over pearls; its water is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey." (1)

19508- Wahb b. Ibrāhīm al-Ghassāmī narrated to us in the year 255 AH, Isrāʾīl b. Ḥātim al-Marwazī narrated to us, Muqātil b. Ḥibbān narrated to us from al-Aṣbagh b. Nabātah from ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, he said: When this Sūrah was revealed to the Prophet (ﷺ): "Indeed, We have granted you al-Kawthar, so pray to your Lord and sacrifice [wanḥar]," the Messenger of Allāh said: "O Jibrīl, what is this slaughtering [naḥīrah] that my Lord has commanded me with?"

He said: "It is not a slaughtering, but He commands you that when you prepare for prayer, raise your hands when you say the Takbīr, when you bow, when you raise your head from bowing, and when you prostrate, for it is our prayer and the prayer of the angels who are in the seven heavens. Everything has an ornament, and the ornament of prayer is raising the hands at every Takbīr."

19509- From ʿIkrimah (may Allāh be pleased with him), he said: Al-Kawthar is what Allāh gave him of Prophethood, goodness, and the Qurʾān. (2)

19510- From al-Ḥasan, he said: Al-Kawthar is the Qurʾān. (3)

19511- From Mujāhid, ʿAṭāʾ, and ʿIkrimah regarding His saying: "So pray to your Lord and sacrifice," they said: It is the morning prayer in Jamʿ (Muzdalifah) and the slaughtering of the camels in Minā. (4)

19512- From ʿAṭāʾ regarding "So pray to your Lord," he said: It is the Eid prayer. (5)

19513- From Saʿīd b. Jubayr regarding His saying: "And sacrifice," he said: The camels. (6)

His saying: The al-abtar [the cut-off].

19514- From al-Suddī (may Allāh be pleased with him), he said: Quraysh used to say that when a man's male children died, so-and-so was cut off [butira].
