- From Ibn Abbas, may God be pleased with both of them, regarding His saying: "And no aged person is granted a long life..." to the end of the verse. He says: There is no one for whom I have decreed a long life and existence except that he will reach what I have destined for him of age, and I have decreed that for him. It refers to the Book which I have decreed for him; it is not added to. And there is no one for whom I have decreed a short life and existence who will reach that age, but it refers to the Book that was written for him. That is His saying: "...nor is anything decreased from his life, but it is in a Book." He says: All of that is in a Book with Him.
His saying, the Almighty: "And no aged person is granted a long life, nor is anything decreased from his life."
- From 'Ikrimah regarding His saying: "And no aged person is granted a long life, nor is anything decreased from his life," he said: There is no day one is given life in the world except that it is decreased from his appointed time.
- From Abu Malik regarding His saying: "And no aged person is granted a long life, nor is anything decreased from his life," he said: There is not a day that is taken away from his life except that it is in a Book; every day is a decrease.
- From Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding His saying: "And no aged person is granted a long life, nor is anything decreased from his life, but it is in a Book," he said: It is written at the beginning of the parchment that his age is so-and-so, then it is written below that: this day is two days, until it reaches the end of his life.
- From Hassan ibn 'Atiyyah regarding His saying: "nor is anything decreased from his life," he said: Every day and night that passes is a decrease from his life.
- From Ibn Jurayj, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "And no aged person is granted a long life, except that God wrote his term for him while in his mother's womb, and nothing is decreased from his life when his mother delivers him, reaching whatever he reaches." He says: People were not all created with the same lifespan. This one has a lifespan, and that one has a lifespan; he is shorter in age than this one, and all of that is written for its possessor, reaching whatever he reaches.
- From Ibn Zayd regarding the verse, he said: Do you not see the people? A man lives a hundred years, and another dies when he is born; it is this.
- From al-Suddi regarding the verse, he said: There is no creature except that God has written his lifespan in its entirety.
