- From Abu al-Darda': I heard the Messenger of God (may God bless him and grant him peace) saying: God the Almighty says: "Then We caused to inherit the Book those We have chosen of Our servants. And among them is one who wrongs himself, and among them is one who is moderate, and among them is one who is foremost in good deeds by permission of Allah." As for those who were foremost, they will enter Paradise without account. As for those who were moderate, they are those who will be reckoned with an easy account. And as for those who wronged themselves, they are those who will be reckoned in the length of the place of gathering, then they are those whom God meets with mercy; they are the ones who will say: "Praise be to God who has removed from us [all] sorrow. Indeed, our Lord is Forgiving and Appreciative, who has settled us in the home of residence out of His bounty. There will not touch us therein any weariness, and there will not touch us therein any fatigue."
- From 'Awf ibn Malik, from the Messenger of God (may God bless him and grant him peace): "My nation consists of three thirds: a third will enter Paradise without account; a third will be reckoned with an easy account then enter Paradise; and a third will be purified and exposed. Then the angels will come and say: We found them saying, 'There is no god but God Alone.' God will say: 'Admit them into Paradise by their saying "There is no god but God Alone," and carry their sins over to the people of denial.' And this is what God said: 'And they will surely bear their own burdens and other burdens along with their burdens.' And the confirmation of this is in that which mentions the angels. God the Almighty said: 'Then We caused to inherit the Book those We have chosen of Our servants,' so He divided them into three types. Among them is one who wrongs himself, and this is the one who is exposed and purified; among them is one who is moderate, and he is the one who is reckoned with an easy account; and among them is one who is foremost in good deeds, and he is the one who enters Paradise without account or torment by the permission of God. They all enter it, and He does not differentiate between them. They are adorned therein with bracelets of gold, up to His saying: 'fatigue.'"
- From 'Uthman ibn 'Affan that he interpreted this verse, saying: "Our foremost are those of our struggle (Jihad), beware; our moderate are those who are saved, the people of our settled cities; and beware, our wrongdoer to himself is the one among the people of our desert."
- From Ibn al-Hanafiyyah who said: "This nation has been given three things that no nation before it was given: among them is a wrongdoer to himself who is forgiven, among them is a moderate one in the Gardens, and among them is one who is foremost in the highest place."
- From Mujahid, "Then We caused to inherit the Book those We have chosen of Our servants. And among them is one who wrongs himself," he said: They are the companions of the left. "And among them is one who is moderate," he said: The companions of the right. "And among them is one who is foremost in good deeds by permission of Allah," he said: They are the foremost of all people.
