His saying: 'Indeed, it is We who bring the dead to life and record what they have put forth and their traces.'
- Muhammad ibn al-Wazir al-Wasiti narrated to us, Ishaq al-Azraq narrated to us, from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Abu Sufyan, from Abu Nadra, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, he said: The Banu Salama lived in an outlying area of Medina, and they wanted to move close to the mosque. Then 'Indeed, it is We who bring the dead to life and record what they have put forth and their traces' was revealed. The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said to them: 'Your traces are recorded,' so they did not move.
- From Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, he said: The Banu Salama lived in an outlying area of Medina, and they wanted to move close to the mosque. So Allah revealed: 'Indeed, it is We who bring the dead to life and record what they have put forth and their traces.' The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) summoned them and said: 'Your traces are recorded.' Then he recited the verse to them, so they desisted.
- From Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: 'And record what they have put forth and their traces,' he said: This refers to the footsteps on the day of Jumu'ah.
- From Mujahid (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding 'And record what they have put forth,' he said: Their deeds. 'And their traces,' he said: Their footsteps with their feet.
- From Qatada (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the verse, he said: If anything of the son of Adam's trace were to be overlooked, this trace which the winds erase would be overlooked. But the trace and all the deeds of the son of Adam are recorded until this trace is numbered as to whether it was in obedience to Allah or in disobedience to Him. So whoever among you can have his trace recorded in obedience to Allah, let him do so.
- From Sa'id ibn Jubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: 'And record what they have put forth and their traces,' he said: What they instituted of a Sunnah (tradition) which was acted upon after their death.
- From Mujahid (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: 'We record what they have put forth,' he said: What they put forth of good. 'And their traces,' he said: What they left behind of misguidance.
- From Jarir ibn 'Abd Allah al-Bajali, he said: 'The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said...'
