His saying, the Exalted: "And he to whom We grant long life, We reverse him in creation."

18106 - From Qatadah regarding His saying: "And he to whom We grant long life, We reverse him in creation," he said: "It is old age. His hearing, his sight, and his strength change, as you have seen."

18107 - From Sufyan regarding His saying: "And he to whom We grant long life, We reverse him," he said: "Eighty years."

18108 - From Qatadah, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "And he to whom We grant long life," he says: "Whomever We extend his lifespan, 'We reverse him in creation,' so that he may not know anything after having knowledge; meaning old age."

His saying, the Exalted: "And We have not taught him poetry."

18109 - From al-Suddi, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "And We have not taught him poetry," he said: "Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace."

18110 - From Qatadah regarding His saying: "And We have not taught him poetry, nor is it befitting for him," he said: "Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace; Allah protected him from that. 'It is but a reminder,'" he said: "This Quran, 'to warn him who is alive,'" he said: "Alive of heart, alive of sight, 'and that the word may be justified against the disbelievers,' because of their deeds, the deeds of evil."

18111 - From Qatadah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: "It reached me that it was said to Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, 'Did the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, ever recite any poetry?' She said: 'It was the most hateful speech to him, except that he used to recite the verse of the brother of Banu Qays, reversing its last and first parts, saying: "And news comes to you from whom you have not provided with provisions." Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said to him: "It is not like that." So the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "By Allah, I am no poet, nor is it befitting for me."'"

18112 - My father narrated to us, [saying] Abu Salamah narrated to us, [saying] Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Ali ibn Zayd, from al-Hasan—meaning al-Basri—who said: "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to recite this verse: 'Islam and old age are sufficient for a man as a restraint.'"
